Class Procedures & Policies AP Statistics Ms. Suby 630-636-2303 JSuby@sd308.org Hello, I am very excited about the upcoming school year with you! Below you will find what you need to do to be successful in this class. Course Description: AP Statistics is a college level course that offers the student a comprehensive study of Statistics. The course curriculum is determined by The College Board, and will prepare the students to take the AP Test in the spring of the school year. According to The College Board, “AP Course in Statistics is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.” If you would like further information from the college board, feel free to log on to their website at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/ and access the AP portion of the website. Required Materials: You are expected to come prepared for class everyday with: your AP Statistics workbook, your textbook, a calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 is recommended), a binder, and a pencil. The AP Statistics workbook that will be provided contains class notes. Once you receive the workbook, it is your property and you are highly encouraged to write in it. Lost or damaged workbooks can be replaced for a fee. Homework will be checked daily for completion, but will not be awarded points towards your grade. These assignments will be entered into the Homework category. Homework quizzes may be given randomly, this quiz will consist of 1 question similar to the homework assignment or example from the notes given in class; it will be graded for accuracy and worth 5 points and will be included in the Classwork category of your overall grade. A calendar will be passed out for each chapter that will contain the homework assignments. This will also be posted in the back of the room and available on my website. Notes will also be checked daily, but will not be awarded points towards your grade. It is your responsibility to copy or print the PowerPoint notes daily. These assignments will be entered into the Homework category. Tests & Quizzes: Tests and quizzes will always be announced well in advance and it is your responsibility to be prepared. It is not a good idea to wait to get help until the day before, because I may not be available. The tests will be “fair” in the sense that, if you know the material, you will do well. My intent is not to fool you, but to find out what you know. I do give partial credit, so be sure to show all work. An absence the day before a test does NOT excuse you from the test. Test Retakes: You must come in for extra help any day before school (6:45 – 7:10) or on Tuesdays after school (2:35 – 3:23). You must then get a Test Retake Review, complete it, and score at least a 75%. If these two things are completed, then you will be eligible to retake. The retake must be completed before the next chapter test is given. Your two test grades will be averaged and that grade will be entered into Home Access. Retakes can be taken any day before school (6:45 am or later) or Tuesdays after school (2:35 – 3:23). If you schedule a time with me to retake a test and do not show up, your opportunity to retake that test will be revoked. Attendance Policies: If you are absent, you are responsible for all missed work. It is also your responsibility to find out what you missed during your absence including any notes, group or class work, or homework. Assignments will be posted on the bulletin board in the back of the room. Each student is given one day for every absent day, plus one extra day to make up missed work. Again, I will not ask you for it; it is your responsibility to show me missing assignments. An unexcused or truant absence means a “0” for the day with no opportunity for make-up. ***If you are attending a field trip, the work due on the day of the field trip must be completed the day you return from the field trip and you are responsible for the material you miss. In other words, the homework assigned the day of the field trip is due the day you return. Otherwise, it will be considered a late assignment with only 2 out of 5 points possible. Tardies: It is your responsibility to be in class on time. You will not be allowed to enter the classroom after the bell rings. If you are tardy, you will be required to see a Dean’s Assistant to receive an electronic pass to be admitted into the classroom. Bathroom: You may use the restroom at any point during class by simply taking the bathroom pass and signing out when you leave and signing in when you return. Only one person may use the restroom at a time. Please remember to take your school ID with you. If this policy is abused, use of the bathroom will only be for emergencies. Miscellaneous: *Pencil MUST be used on ALL quizzes and tests. If you do not use a pencil you will receive a penalty to your grade. *Sharing of calculators is not allowed during tests or quizzes. Please speak to me if you do not have access to a graphing calculator. *If you are caught cheating in any form, you will receive a zero for that work. If you are looking at another student’s test, I will assume you are cheating. *Extra Help: Don’t put off asking for extra help. Many times a few minutes are all that are needed to clarify some concept. I will be available every day before school from 6:45 until 7:10 in room E395 and after school on Tuesdays from 2:35 – 3:20 in the math office (E380). Website Access: http://www.sd308.org/Domain/1531 or you can find the link to my website by going to the Oswego East Home Page, clicking on teachers, and finding my name. It is updated frequently with assignment sheets, some worksheets, notes, and review sheets. If you would like an extra copy of this syllabus, one is located on my website.
