It is my pleasure to have you as one of my students this year. My goals are to see that you develop thorough understanding of the subject matter and that you can apply the knowledge you learn in class to new situations. Course Goals: Students will cover the following units and topics: I. Interpreting Categorical Data a. Frequency Tables b. Comparison of proportions/Well designed expts. II. Functions – Modeling Change a. Graphs and Transformations b. Applications III. Counting Methods IV. Mathematics of Investment a. Interest and Annuities b. Loans, Mortgages and Leases V. Binomial Distribution and Statistical Inference a. expected value, simulations VI. Informatics a. elementary set theory and logic b. modular arithmetic and cryptosystems c. error-detecting (ZIP, ISBN, UPC) and error correcting codes VII. Spatial Visualization and Representations VIII. Mathematics of Democratic Decision Making In order for the class and I to achieve these goals we must all work together to create a positive learning environment. Materials: Must be brought to class everyday! Textbook, notebook, pencils, eraser. Students will be responsible to keep classroom materials in excellent condition or replace them on his/her own time. Students must be able to log on to his/her ALEKS account. Students' notebooks must include notes, page numbers, major topics, and examples. Homework: Homework will be assigned every time we meet. You will be responsible to write the homework down. Most homework assignments will require internet access. If you are unable to access the internet please inform me as soon as possible so we can make appropriate arrangements. Late Assignments: Per California Educational Code, students are required to submit documentation when they are absent. Students are permitted to make up any late assignments provided that they have cleared the absence with a note submitted to the admissions office. The instructor is not required to give students credit for assignments that were due on the date of an uncleared or truant absence. Tests/Quizzes: You will have a quiz every week. Make-up tests and quizzes are given before school, nutrition or after school. Mandatory tutoring and retakes will be in place for those who score less than 70% on quizzes.
