THE BITS…
Today is Columbus Day. It marks the anniversary of Columbus discovering the
new world. When you think about it, the odds are pretty astronomical that
Christopher Columbus would discover the new world on Columbus Day.
Today is Columbus Day. When Columbus arrived in the new world he brought
with him disease. Thank goodness in the last 522 years we’ve found a way to
prevent people from bringing disease to America from foreign lands.

TINSELTOWN TATTLER…
AMANDA BYNES has returned to L.A. and checked into a mental health facility
and it turns out that Britney Spears’ ex-manager, Sam Lutfi, was involved. He’s
the guy that was accused of feeding Britney the drugs that kept her on the crazy
train back in her dark days. Lutfi was in cahoots with Amanda’s parents to get her
out to L.A. on the pretext of meeting with lawyers that would help Amanda sue her
mom and dad. However, when she arrived, Amanda was placed on an involuntary
5150 hold and was then checked into the facility. Amanda’s parents are aware of
Lutfi’s history and have confiscated her cell phone and have not put him on her list
of approved visitors. Amanda’s trip wasn’t without its adventures. Security had to
escort Amanda out of New York’s LaGuardia airport after she got into a shouting
match with a ticket agent while demanding a direct flight as soon as possible and
refusing to listen to the agent explain that planes have specific routes. Amanda
then went to JFK and caught another flight. All this came after Amanda went on a
Twitter rant on Friday. She first claimed that her father abused her, but then
recanted, saying it was the microchip in her brain that made her say those things,
but that her father was the one that ordered them to microchip her.
Are CAMERON DIAZ and boyfriend BENJI MADDEN engaged or perhaps
already married? Diaz was spotted with a gold ring on that finger at a recent
Hollywood luncheon. Back in July, a source told E News that they were "openly
acknowledging to friends that they see a long future together, and yes, marriage
may be a part of that plan." Perhaps it was more than just an engagement ring as
the one Diaz wore appeared to be an eternity band, which is a popular choice
among women for wedding rings. Diaz and Madden have been dating since at least
May and she introduced him to her parents over the Fourth of July Weekend.
Duck Dynasty star JOHN LUKE ROBERTSON proposed to girlfriend Mary Kate

The fallout from the STEPHEN COLLINS situation continues and his former 7th
Heaven co-stars can’t be too thrilled with him. Because of the scandal, reruns of
the show have been pulled off the air, which means all the stars are about to see
their residual checks dry up. The TV Guide Network and UP TV both dropped the
show and were the last two channels airing it in the U.S.
August: Osage County actress MISTY UPHAM was reported missing in
Washington State last Monday and was last seen leaving the apartment she shares
with her parents in the city of Auburn the day before. Police say officers responded
to a suicide call at the apartment, but when officers got there, she’d already packed
up some things and left. However, they say this isn’t the first time Misty has left
her home and police aren’t actively searching for her. Misty’s father says she’d
been behaving erratically since recently changing her medications.

before he could come into physical contact with the fan.

GWYNETH PALTROW hosted a fundraiser for President Obama at her home last
week and spies say she was pretty high strung that day! An insider who was there
tells Radar Online that Gwyneth “was extremely unpleasant all day! She was
snappy with the people that were there and even yelled at one of the workers for
not doing the table placements correctly.” About 100 workers were at Paltrow’s
home and she made sure that everyone knew just how special she was. The insider
says, “She was walking around on her phone and talking really loud to friends,
letting everyone know that the president was coming to her house, as if everyone
didn’t know already. At around 10am, she started drinking wine and she was
smoking cigarettes all day.”
Former Charmed star ROSE MCGOWAN wasn’t so charmed when a man climbed
out of a pavement grate and threw a couple of smoke bombs into the outside dining
area of the Greenwich Village restaurant she was at. Rose later tweeted: "Someone
just threw two red smoke bombs into the restaurant I was eating in. Eyes are
burning." Diners and people passing by at the time were said to be shaken,
although a waiter was able to scoop up the fireworks and toss them in the street.
The suspect had already gotten away by the time police arrived.
KANYE WEST had a personal shopping day during Paris Fashion Week. In fact,

Coliseum. Contestants will form rock bands and he’ll change personnel as he sees
fit. Simmons says he plans to give his contestants tough love, instead of what he
calls ‘coddling’ by other singing show judges. While slamming the other shows,
Simmons said, "We want to open the trap doors of life and get tough. There will be
heartbreak, and people are going to cry and their dreams will be shattered, just like

THE WATERCOOLER…
A Halloween-themed hay ride in Maine turned tragic when a Jeep hauling a trailer
lost control and crashed into a tree, killing a teenage girl and injuring more than 20
others. Authorities say a mechanical problem may have contributed to the accident.
Some of the victims had minor injuries, but at least two others sustained more
serious injuries.
US Airways has a PR nightmare on their hands that started when First Sgt. Albert
Marle asked a flight attendant if he could hang his heavily decorated military
jacket in a closet during the flight. The attendant told him the closet was only for
first-class passengers, and he went back to his seat. It might’ve ended there had
passengers not overhead and pitched a fit on his behalf. One passenger tweeted:
“US Airways is it really in your policy to disrespect brave men such as Sergeant
Marle?" That tweet and others went viral and the airline issued an apology saying
they were reviewing the incident internally, but have a long history of serving
military members and that they hold the men and women who serve our country in
the highest regard. They added that the closet was full and the flight attendant had
no choice, but passengers say if that was true, she didn't say so at the time.

Pepsi has created a new beverage called Caleb's Kola. It’s named after Caleb
Bradham, a North Carolina pharmacist credited with creating the Pepsi formula
back in the 1890s. The cola comes in glass bottles and has no artificial sweeteners
or high-fructose corn syrup. The cola is made with cane sugar, a special blend of
spices and a kola nut extract. According to Caleb's Kola site, the beverage will
have 110 calories and 29 grams of sugar per 10-ounce bottle. Caleb’s Kola will be
sold at select Costco locations in New York, Washington, D.C., Maryland and
Virginia to start, but Pepsi has plans for a wider distribution later on.

THE WATERCOOLER 2…
There is one bright spot to the long drought in California and that is the lack of rain
is actually leading to some of the best wine Napa and Sonoma counties have seen
in a while. Less water means smaller grapes, and that concentrates the flavor. On
the other hand, a lot of rain can mean moldy grapes. On top of that, the sun is
making grapes riper earlier, and that allows a harvest before the threat of autumn
storms. Some drought-era wines are already proving the point as Cabernet
Sauvignons from 2012 and 2013 managed a score of 96 in a consumer guide,
whereas 2011's versions scored just 78. However, all good things had better come
to an end as a continued drought could lead to salty soil, which won’t be good.
There’s good news for bacon lovers as prices may start heading downward. A virus
killed millions of baby pigs in the last year, which led to higher pork prices.
However, thanks to warmer weather and farmers' efforts, the number of pigs has
rebounded and it could mean a slight drop in prices this winter and a more
noticeable decline next spring.
It may seem hard to imagine, but researchers now say that drinking fruit juice
could be bad for you. A new study from the Swinburne University of Technology
in Hawthorn, Australia, finds a regular morning glass of orange juice increases the
risk of a heart attack or angina. They note that the average glass of fruit juice
contains the equivalent of seven teaspoons of sugar and that people who regularly
drink fruit juice have significantly higher blood pressure than those who have it
occasionally. Study author, Dr Matthew Pase, said that although juices may have
essential vitamins, they commonly contain high amounts of sugar with negligible
fiber and therefore may be contributing to excessive sugar intake.

THE WATERCOOLER 3…
It’s usually pretty nerve wracking to walk into the boss’ office and ask for a raise.
However, Wells Fargo employee Tyrel Oates took a different approach. Oates
emailed Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf and cc’d some 200,000 other co-workers,
suggesting the company use part of their massive profits to give every employee a
raise of $10,000, saying it would show the rest of the United States, if not the
world, that big corporations can have a heart, not to mention the positive publicity
it would generate in a time of extreme consumer skepticism towards banks. Wells
Fargo isn’t commenting, but Oates says he’s been with the company for nearly
seven years, works full time, and makes a little more than $15 an hour. In
comparison, Stumpf's total 2013 compensation was $19.3 million.

You can rest easier knowing that Liberia is tackling the Ebola crisis head on.
Officials there say Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man infected with the first
case of Ebola in the U.S., will face prosecution when he returns to the country for
lying on an airport screening questionnaire about whether he’d “cared for an Ebola
patient or touched the body of someone who had died in an area affected by
Ebola.” Of course, it’s possible Duncan hadn’t known he was in contact with
someone that had Ebola, but it will be impossible to prosecute him as he’s dead.

Virginia’s Southside Cremation Services was performing its work on a body last
week. Operations manager Jerry Hendrix said, "The man was a little larger than
what we had done in the past" and that he’d never seen anything like it in 20 years.
What he’d never seen was the 500-pound body causing the furnace to overheat and
grease from the deceased splattering on the roofing, which caught fire. Firefighters
quickly extinguished the blaze and there were no fatalities, well, except for…
Andrew Whitaker picked girlfriend Tammy Hiser up from work at Daytona Beach
strip club Biggins. Tammy got mad at Andrew because he wouldn’t talk to her and
he was upset because she was drunk again, especially since her drinking got them
kicked out of his mother’s house. Tammy punched Andrew repeatedly in the face
until they got to their motel. When they arrived, Andrew ran up to the room and
Tammy followed a few minutes later with an ax. Tammy swung the ax at Andrew,
but he was able to take it away from her and call police and she was arrested for
the second time in three weeks for attacking him. Andrew says he’s trying to get
the felony charge dropped adding, "I see spending the rest of my life with her."
An unnamed Queenstown, New Zealand man decided to give himself a birthday
treat by hiring a female performer to come to his house and provide a lap dance.
This particular lap dance included handcuffs and the good news for the man is the
performance lasted longer than anticipated. The bad news is that’s because the
cuffs got stuck on his wrists. Eight firefighters arrived to free the man and noted,
"They weren't police handcuffs…I guess you'd describe them as recreational."
An Arizona man visiting Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s Scarlett O’Hara’s strip club

more exact count. However, when he pulled some cash out of his pocket he
dropped his bag of cocaine on the ground in front of the officers. The man’s
freedom was then stolen from him as he was arrested.
