JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Assistant Street Superintendent, this position plans, organizes,
coordinates, supervises and participates in the work of Public Works field operations crews engaged in
repair, replacement, installation and maintenance of streets, storm drainage, right-of-way maintenance,
traffic control systems, snow and ice removal and other Public Works activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Provides proper traffic safety protection of work crews
 Follows through with established work priorities for emergencies and other unscheduled repairs
 Assists with short-term operating plans
 Participates and leads a team in the maintenance and repair of asphalt surfaces, to construct or
repair streets
 Directs, pours and assists in finishing concrete and masonry work including rough carpentry work
to construct forms to finish curbs, gutters, ramps and related areas
 Installs maintains, inspects and repairs as needed a variety of ditches, sewers, drains, gutters
and culverts
 Operates a variety of equipment such as loaders, tractors, mowers, Skid steer loaders, chippers,
roller, etc. Additionally acts as a backup operator in time of manpower shortages.
 Works outdoors in adverse weather conditions, vehicular traffic and hazards involving the use of
power tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and material
 Leads crew and participates in snow removal; assists with plans, organization, and schedules of
snow-removal operations; responds to snow removal operations and emergency situations on a
24-hour on-call basis. May include holidays, weekends and special events as needed
 Produces and maintains daily and monthly reports
 Performs preventative maintenance tasks, such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor
parts, and lubricating equipment in order to keep equipment in proper operating condition
 Carries emergency beeper every three weeks
 Provides respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers and
internal and external customers
 Maintains a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with policies, procedures,
goals and objectives of the City, Department, and Division
 Maintains equipment and supply inventory; maintains records relating to receipt and issuance of
materials or equipment; prepares purchase and supply requisitions
 Cooperates, assists, and communicates timely, accurately and effectively with all departments,
maintaining a positive environment and positive communications with fellow employees and the
public to achieve mutual goals
 Coordinates and oversees the work of others, consistently applying policies and procedures and
keeping superiors informed of any potential performance concerns
 Responsible for enhancing employee performance through establishing and communicating clear
expectations and evaluating performance in a fair and professional manner

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
 3 to 5 years of progressively more responsible Public Works/maintenance experience or General
Contractor experience
 High School diploma or GED preferred
 Current Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required or the ability to obtain within next 120
days. Must have passed written examination prior to date of hire
 CPR/First Aid certification preferred
 Ability to work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution
and dust
 Ability to work with and around chemicals, gases, and other toxic or dangerous substances using
only normal protective equipment
 Move heavy objects (80 pounds or more) short distances
 24 on-call availability
 Forklift certification preferred
 Supervisory experience a plus
 Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
 Outdoor work in the field experience preferred
