JOB SUMMARY

This position operates a variety of equipment, vehicles and power tools to perform skilled work to build, repair or maintain streets, catch basins, storm drains, culverts, ditches, and public works projects. The primary duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment and may include working in adverse weather conditions, vehicular traffic, and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and materials

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, right of ways, storm water systems and public works projects

Participates in the maintenance and repair of asphalt surfaces to construct or repair streets

Pours and assists in finishing concrete and masonry work including rough carpentry work to construct forms to finish curbs, gutters, ramps and related areas

Installs, maintains, inspects and repairs as needed a variety of ditches, sewers, drains, gutters and culverts

Participates as directed in sign fabrication and traffic painting

Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service

Operates a variety of equipment such as: loaders, tractors, mowers, skid steer loaders, chippers, roller, etc.

Acts as a back-up operator during periods of severe manpower shortage

May direct the work of individuals or small crews

Sets up and takes down traffic warning devices and barricades for traffic control

Responds to snow removal operations and emergency situations on a 24-hour on-call basis. May include holidays, weekends and special events as needed

Plows snow, salts or sands roads, hauls rock, sand, dirt, brush, water, fuel, asphalt and equipment

Makes minor repairs to equipment and performs preventative maintenance tasks, such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment, in order to keep equipment in proper operating condition

Operates mechanical equipment, such as: jackhammer, pneumatic compacting equipment and a crack seal kettle, emulsion spray wand, or other equally sized equipment to repair City streets

Operates pneumatic and hand tools; may operate light equipment; provides assistance to equipment operators

Provides respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers and internal and external customers

Maintains a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department, and Division

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation

High School or GED preferred

Current and valid Missouri drivers license

Current Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required or the ability to obtain within 120 days.

Must have passed written examination prior to date of hire.

CPR / First Aid preferred

Knowledge of tools, methods, materials, equipment and terminology used in construction and maintenance of street and traffic control facilities

Understand and comply with simple written and oral instructions.

Move heavy objects (80 pounds or more) short distances.

Understand simple road maps

Outdoor work in the field experience preferred
