EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes April 8, 2011 Present: Martha Aaron, Beverly Anthony, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Veronica Mendoza, Alin Sanchez, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 2. Review of Minutes from March 1st meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) Grant for Career Technical Education – Career Advancement Academy (CTE-CAA) ended up being $662,000. This grant is for Compton Center and El Camino College. We are bringing in two casuals to help support the grants. 2) Team is developing a promotional video, planning the “Road Less Traveled” conference and sponsoring robotics competition this month. 3) Engineer competition will be held at CSU Dominguez Hills on April 9th. Two teams will be competing. This is for middle and high school students. 4) Certified Quality Engineering training starts April 30 through May 21 on Saturdays at the Business Training Center. o Center International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: 1) Maurice Kogon is presenting at the BESAC (Business Education Statewide Advisory Committee) conference in Sacramento. He is talking about the podcasts CITD has put together regarding exporting. 2) Kerry Bonner is actively recruiting for the China International Environmental Protection Exhibition and Conference being held from June 7th – June 10th in Beijing. 3) Two ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)classes are scheduled at the Business Training Center. o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Summer 2011 catalogs are out. 2) It is confirmed that Torrance CitiCable will be filming the April 7th Pentagon Papers panel discussion. It will be aired starting April 13th. 3) Summer Kid’s College preparation continues with a focus on instructor contracts, classroom locations and logistics. 4) May events preparation continues: Nixon Library excursion and Mother-Daughter Tea. 5) Fall 2011 catalog preparation begins. o Contract Education – Maricela Vital: 1) Eldon is working on new database to help track companies doing ETP training. 2) We will administer the AB 118 grant for $783,000 that we are partnering on with other colleges. 3) Our updated training catalog will be distributed to companies on thumb drives. It can also be found on our website. Employment Training Panel (ETP) 1) High wage, High Skill contract: New training partner, Greenbridge International has training scheduled in March and April. 2) ETP training in partnership with Kern Community College District includes Computer Skills. 3) ETP training in partnership with Riverside Community College District includes Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Manufacturing classes. 4) Awarded funding of $400,000 for the general ETP two-year training contract. 1 o o Contract Education 1) City of Torrance Customer Service Academy’s Spring training consists of three classes and starts April 11th. Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) SBDC has leased office space in Hermosa Beach for the consultants to conduct advising sessions there. We are hoping to attract clients who live and work within the beach cities area. 2) Star Van Buren is revising the SBDC website. It should be up in May (www.southbaysbdc.org). 3) The upcoming SBDC National Conference will be held in San Diego this year. 4) Star has been busy doing outreach to local bank branches. 5) An HP grant was submitted. If awarded, it would provide a computer center with 30 seats. Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Maritime Training: Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class filled for April 26th. Vessel Security Officer class will be held April 9th-10th. Lifeboat class scheduled for April 11th. Advanced Fire class scheduled for May 2nd-6th. Tankerman class scheduled for May 31stJune 4th. Medical Provider training to be scheduled in July. Disney Cruise Line Personal Safety classes on-going weekly. 2) Terminal Island classes: All Terminal Island classes have been placed on hold until further notice due to the Federal government shutdown. This is no an issue any more. 3) LA Metro Detention Center Parenting class to start April 14th. Beverly Anthony 1) Finalized computer training classes with OTTP (Occupational Therapy Training Program for at-riskyouth). 2) Currently teaching computer training to six Family Support students who are drawing their unemployment benefits. 3) Had problem with delivery of books needed for class but this is resolved now. Denise DiPasquale 1) Began teaching Blueprint for Workplace Success to 16 veterans at US Vets. Positive feedback received. 2) Attended Karen Hess’ Memorandum of Understanding development meeting on the campus. 3) Attended John Weitzel’s Utility Grant Advisory Board meeting in preparation for administering WorkKeys Assessment tests. Administered Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information on the campus Monday through Friday to approximately 40 students who are participating in the grant. 4) Taught my version of resume writing and interviewing skills to Beverly Anthony’s computer class. 5) Attended the ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Program) dinner in San Pedro. 6) Attended the following meetings in connection with my role as Vice Chairman of the South Bay Workforce Investment Board: El Segundo City Council Meeting, South Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Installation Luncheon, South Bay WIB Executive Committee Meeting, and Inglewood State of the City Luncheon. Discussion o State Budget: Federal government‘s revenue has decreased and services are being pared down. Winter session will be eliminated. State budget already has been cut $11.5 billion. We are looking at an additional $15 billion in cuts. o Grants: We are going after as many grants as possible. The economy is turning around and companies are coming to us for training.
