Meeting Notes

Present: Martha Aaron, Beverly Anthony, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hess,

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business
Training Center in Room 2.
Review of Minutes from February 4th meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:
1) Grants awarded: Career Technical Education – Career Advancement Academy (CTE-CAA) for
$662,743; Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) for $200,000; Workforce Innovation
Partnerships (SB70) for $225,000; Job Incentive Fund for $175,000; Responsive Training Fund
(RTF) for $175,000.
2) Successfully completed the Project Management training.
Traci Traina:
1) Completed 6 Sigma Black Belt training.
2) Certified Quality Engineer training will start April 30.
Karen Hess – Tech Prep:
1) Articulation Day is March 10 th for Career and Technical Education high school students to El
Camino College. Renewals = Woodworking, Metal, Electronics and Automotive. PLTW = Lennox,
CAMS, El Segundo, DaVinci.
2) Architecture Certificate/Aeronautics curriculum collaborative development meeting at DaVinci
Charter School.
3) Asked to collaborate with Los Angeles Unified School District on National Science Foundation
(NSF) grant for robotics.
4) March 10 th at 4:00 pm, EMSI (Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc.) Career Coach Webnair. Good opportunity for counselors or anyone interacting with students to learn about career modeling software.
5) SB70 Middle School Counselor Conference theme is “The Road Less Traveled”. Road Trip Nation guy is the speaker.
6) CCAOE coming up. Doing presentation on Partnerships (El Camino Project Lead the Way Chevron partnership).
7) ECC Robotics club’s first ever VEX collegiate competition at CSU Northridge on April 2 nd . Parts have been ordered for the students to put together their entry.
Alicia Zambrano – CTE (Career and Technical Education):
1) California Math and Science High School Academy (CAMS): processing registrations for spring semester for engineering and robotics programs.
2) Aerospace Fastener Training: have completed student orientations and registrations before late registration deadline.
3) Outreach presentations for Robotics will be given at Vista, Lynwood, Firebaugh and Compton High
Schools.
4) Hosted a series of Free Income Tax Preparation Events on February 25 & 26. Served over 150 families providing free income tax services to students and the community-at-large.

5) Career and Technical Education Open House this month. o Center International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:
1) CITD affiliation approved. Waiting for official notification.
2) Currently working on a Title VI proposal. o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Summer 2011 catalog is near completion and will be submitted to the printers. They are expected to be available March 18 th . Online registration is available now.
2) Torrance CitiCable’s Spotlight Torrance coverage of the Pirate Camp (for adults) class aired from
February 2-March 2, 2011 and is available for viewing on their archive website: http://www.ci.torrance.ca.us/CableTV/22216.htm

3) Starting work on Fall 2011 Community Education catalog: Instructor RFPs have been sent out and are due back Friday, March 11, 2011.
4) Kid’s College preparation continues with a focus on instructor contracts, classroom locations and logistics.
5) UPDATES: Pentagon Papers – 40 th Anniversary staged readings at Nakano Theatre opened last
Saturday and special commendation was made to El Camino College. o Contract Education – Maricela Vital:
Employment Training Panel (ETP)
1) High wage, High Skill contract: Currently providing APICS (Advancing Productivity, Innovation, &
Competitive Success) training. New training partner, Greenbridge International has training scheduled in March and April.
2) ETP training in partnership with Kern Community College District includes Computer Skills.
3) ETP training in partnership with Riverside Community College District includes Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Manufacturing classes.
4) Eldon Davidson and Deborah Imonti are scheduled to go to Sacramento on March 25 th to officially be awarded funds for the two-year training contract for $400,000.
Contract Education
1) City of Torrance Customer Service Academy ’s seventh training session is ending March 10th.
Spring training will consist of three cohorts and will commence on April 11th. o Small Business Development Center
– LauraLee Garinger:
1) SBDC will be hiring two new advisors, Anthony Ruiz and Donald Stukes. Anthony has experience in general business as well as website utilization, social media and video and audio as marketing tools. Donald has a strong background in Government Procurement as well as business development and consulting.
2) Charlie Lowe, Becki Walker and Star Van Buren are attending the 23 rd Annual JPL-SBA High Tech
Conference at the LAX Westin today. Sharon Peterson will be attending the conference tomorrow,
March 2 nd , and presenting one of the workshops.
3) A new Quickbooks series will start on Wednesday, March 9 th . The classes will be held every
Wednesday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan:
1) Maritime Training: Vessel Security Officer class is tentative for March 5th-6th. Standards for
Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class filled for March 22 nd . Lifeboat and
Advanced Fire classes scheduled for March 14 th . Medical Provider to be scheduled in July. Disney
Cruise Line Personal Safety classes on-going weekly.
2) Terminal Island classes: Business 15 started February 7 th . Parenting starts March 8 th . Job Fair preparation scheduled for end of March. Job Fair will be held May 25 th .
3) LA Metro Detention Center Parenting classes on-going. Graduation March 10 th .
Beverly Anthony
1) New student will be taking the Business Entrepreneur Success Training (BEST).
2) Three individuals are taking the Office 2011 computer training class.

Denise DiPasquale
1) Attended graduation of 2 nd cohort of students in the Gateways to Green Building Program.
2) Researched feasibility of a possible Medical Administrative Assistant training program. Prepared I-
Train paperwork for possible class.
3) Met with John Weitzel to assist him with his utilities grant including familiarizing him with WorkKeys and Key Train technology assessments.
4) Met with Ivan Mason and Brigitte Liebel at U.S. Vets about forming a possible partnership. Made presentation to staff of U.S. Vets to offer Blueprint for Workplace Success training or resume writing and interview preparation for their veterans.
5) Attended SBWIB Executive meeting, Business and Economic sub-committee and general board meetings as well as the Hawthorne State of the City meeting.
Discussion o State Budget: The Governor wants to put an extension of existing taxes on the June ballot but will need 4 Republican votes to do this. Voters will decide. The college has 3 budget scenarios regarding the various outcomes of the G overnor’s budget. Positive point – Governor’s proposed budget for Economic Workforce Development was augmented by $4 million and will not be affected. o Grants: Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) has received $1.3 million in grants and is well positioned. The Business Training Center is applying on its own and with partners for
TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance) grants. o Processes and Procedures: It is important to follow processes and procedures set up by the college when spending money. Los Angeles Community College District is currently in trouble due to the choices they made.
Other
Sexual Harassment Training is provided on-line to Management on a regular basis. The question came up as to whether it is offered to classified staff.
