EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes July 20, 2011 Present: Martha Aaron, Kristi Adams, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hess, Alin Sanchez, Traci Traina, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 21. Review of Minutes from June 7th meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Grants – Kristi Adams: 1) Submitted Manufacturing Matters in California! grant. ECC will be lead institution and fiscal agent; Partners include Cerritos and North Orange County Community College Districts. Notification will be at the end of September. 2) Creating a comprehensive database solution for project managers and administrative staff for documentation and reporting on all grant activity. 3) Due September 8th are 3 grants under the Economic and Workforce Development Program, a Responsive Training Fund (RTF), an Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) and a Job Development Incentive Fund (JDIF). 4) Updated Grants page on website. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Karen Hess: 1) (CAA) California Advancement Academies grant will provide 115 (4 cohorts) eighteen to thirty year old at-risk individuals training in machine and tool technology, utilities, aerospace and welding. 2) Developing Energy Efficient Program (DEEP): Two student interns will be selected by the Environmental Technology faculty for the Fall semester to be paid to develop an ECC campus-wide awareness/sustainability program. 3) WOODFEST Open House displayed student Carpentry, Woodworking and Construction exhibits on June 7th. 4) Summer Machine Tool Technology class at ECC has 30 high school students. Alicia Zambrano: 1) During month of June CTE Compton Center staff worked on major recruitments for our CTE Summer Projects including our (CAA) California Advancement Academies, (WIP) Workforce Innovation Partnership, (IDRC) Industry Driven Regional Collaborative, UCLA Robotics, CAMS, North Orange County and over all (CTE) Career Technical Education Summer programs. Some of the locations included our high school feeder schools, adult schools, alternative schools. 2) We met with major organizations such as our local WorkSource Centers, Veterans Centers and Non-Profits Organizations. 3) Worked on having students meet program requirements such as student assessments, online applications, class registration, technical support to instructors in regards to classroom and students. 4) Hosted an Aerospace Fastener Career Day at the Compton Center with over 200 participants and 12 major aerospace companies. Top students were interviewed and 6 ended up with jobs at various companies. Traci Traina: 1) Submitting proposal for an RTF Grant due to Chancellors office September 7th. 2) Still in the process of scheduling Electron Beam Welding, Electrical Code Update, Team Building and UG (engineering software program) for various companies in the area. 3) Six Sigma Green Belt training completed. 1 4) Still waiting notification for on TAA (Trade Adjustment Act) grant submitted by West Los Angeles College and Cerritos College. 5) Working on budget close-outs for the end of the fiscal year and renewing contracts for 2011/12 fiscal year. o Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan: 1) Held (ITAR) International Traffic in Arms Regulations class this month. 2) Every Tuesday will hold a Custom Broker Exam class in Room 31 at the Business Training Center from 6:00pm – 9:00 p.m. 3) Kerry Bonner back from China International Environmental Protection Exhibition and Conference (CIEPEC) held from June 7th – June 10th in Beijing. The event went very well. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger : 1) Busy doing networking with former clients, follow-up calls and onsite visits to find out how our clients are succeeding. We have been able to achieve 120% of our Jobs Created Goal and 114% of our Increased Sales Goal. We will focus next on Business Start-Ups and Capital Infusion. 2) We are concentrating heavily on networking to get the word out about the SBDC and our services. o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Kid’s College started June 27th with smooth operation at the drop-off /pick-up location, classrooms, etc. There is much excitement and enthusiasm in the air by the kids enrolled. 2) Heavy enrollments occurred during the last week before Kid’s College started. Our last minute full scale marketing efforts produced positive results. 3) Final design completion stage of fall 2011 catalog is in process. Catalog should go to press within the next two weeks. 4) Beginning work on Winter/Spring 2012 classes including repeat of Adult Pirate Camp, MotherDaughter Tea and several new class/program ideas in development. o Contract Education – Maricela Vital: Employment Training Panel (ETP) 1) Training provided includes Frontline Leadership, Lean Development, Supervisory, Electrical, Lean Manufacturing, Print Theory and Application, and Customer Service. 2) Submitting application for a new two-year ETP contract in September. 3) Training anticipated starting in September for AB 118 - Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technologies Program. Contract Education 1) City of Torrance began ninth round of Customer Service training with two cohorts. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Maritime Training: Advanced Fire class scheduled for July 18th. Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for July 25th. Lifeboat class scheduled for August 16th. 2) Terminal Island classes: AutoCad, Welding, Parenting, Solar. Blueprint Reading will start July 25th. 3) Job Fair preparation and Job Fair scheduled in August. 4) LA Metro Detention Center Parenting classes on-going. 5) Computer Lab is closed until new computers are installed. Denise DiPasquale 1) Completed a telephone interview to update the Survey of Selected work Readiness Certificates. 2) Attended the South Bay Workforce Investment Board executive committee meeting. 3) Attended the graduation of the Fit for Gold Program that provides Inglewood area high school students an opportunity to exercise at Gold’s Gym while mentoring middle school age children in their homework and physical fitness. 4) Attended graduation of students in Gateways to Green Building Program for whom we provided Blueprint for Workplace Success training. Discussion o State Budget and College Budget: Budget passed. o New Hiring Process: Casuals are required to start work on the 1st business day of the month following board approval.
