EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes February 5, 2010 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Roberto Pandolfi, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 p.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21. Review of Minutes from January 4th meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Community Education: 1) Winter/Spring catalogs are out. 2) Orientations for Pharmacy Technician and Clinical Medical Assistant were successful. 3) Finalizing the schedule for Kids College 2010. All classes will be held on campus this year. 4) There are problems on campus with our instructors having access to media equipment. 5) 2nd Annual Young @ Heart event is scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) All SBDC staff attended network-wide training that provided a high level view of SBDC goals. 2) Received funding for Youth Entrepreneurial Program (YEP) and conducted orientation on January 30th. The program starts on February 20th. 3) Attended statewide small business stimulus event. The event combined information about all of the sources of stimulus dollars with practical information on what small businesses need to enter the world of government contracting. 4) SBDC workshops are on-going. A current list can be viewed on www.southbaysbdc.org. o Organizational Development and Training – Maricela Vital: 1) Extremely busy in January. February has 26 new classes that involve 8 companies and 512 students. 2) Started training at hospitals. City of Torrance starting third session of Customer Service Training. 3) Passed ETP quarterly audit with no findings. 1 o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan, Roberto Pandolfi Prisons – Roberto Pandolfi: Terminal Island 1) AutoCad will start in the March. Funding is available to conduct wheelchair repair and solar classes. Parenting class in progress. A meeting date is being discussed for the warden to visit our facility. The next Job Fair will be held in April. 2) Detention Center Parenting class in progress. South Bay Center for Counseling 1) Contract signed and funds released for training. We will be providing Solar Thermal training. Maritime Training 1) Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) and the Lifeboat class are scheduled for February. 2) We passed the Coast Guard inspection of our facility with flying colors. We were approved for the Vessel Security Officer training program. Solar Training 1) We are ready to begin training. Computer Lab 1) We will be providing computer and office automation training at two computer labs on campus under the federal stimulus grant for Pacific Gateway clients. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) Currently in the process of writing Economic & Workforce Development (EWD) grants. 2) Organizing Honeywell training. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: 1) Currently in the process of writing grants and completing quarterly reports for EWD grants. 2) Working with Hawthorne High’s International Trade Academy to prepare for the Business Plan competition in New York and to provide financial support. 3) Organizing training events with partners (International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Certified Cargo Screening Program). 4) Participating as guest speakers for Port of Los Angeles event. Green Export Enabler Program 1) Meeting with delegations and preparing for trip to China in March. 2) Busy contacting businesses and coming up with actual GEEP clients. Discussion o Re-bid for EWD programs: We are hearing that some EWD centers have been closed because of this year’s budget cuts. o CA Jobs Bill: $250 million may be available for 18 months for job training. 2 Other Issues Will investigate the roof parking issues to see if parking on the roof should include areas outside of marked parking spaces.
