EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council November 12, 2014 Department Updates o Career Pathways – (not in attendance) o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) We just started a Certified Quality Engineer exam prep training for individuals looking to advance their careers under the H1B grant. We have eight participants. 2) We are recruiting for the Connector and Soldering Academy, which is scheduled to start on December 1, 2014. 3) The H1B program will be audited by the funding agency on November 17 and 18, 2014. We will have to show documentation and project spending for the final year. We are confident that there will not be any major findings. 4) We continue with the process of closing down two grants (WIP and In-Region Investment). o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: (not in attendance). 1) Fall 2014 Job Training Information Session: Two Pharmacy Technician classes are running: 17 students in the daytime expedited class and 11 in the Saturday class. Two Medical Billing and Coding classes are running: 10 students in the daytime class and 22 in the evening weekday class. Personal Fitness Trainer class: 15 students. 2) Winter/Spring 2015 Catalog: Starting design phase, and still developing, updating and recruiting for new teachers phase. 3) Mother Daughter (and Son!) Tea will have a Mardi Gras theme this year. Ten Years After history event will be one evening this year combining three themes of 2005. o Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital: 1. ETP training activity is as follows: o ETP 13-0125 Two-Year Core Contract This contract is officially closed. We had no findings. A check in the amount of $185,865 has been approved. o ET14-0800 AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Contract: Training continues on an on-going basis with our training partners and at the ECC Fire Academy. o ETP ET14-0217 Two-Year Contract (Training Partners: C3, Cerritos, CMTC, Corporate Training Institute and Quest): Training continues on an on-going basis. 2. Contract Education Training: Two VESL classes completed in October. Additionally, Supervisory and VESL training will finish in November. A third amendment to the City of Torrance Agreement was submitted for the November Board meeting. 3. Other Activity: Several community college representatives as well as the ETP director attended the first meeting on October 22nd held at the LA Hotel. It was unanimously agreed that regular meetings in which long-term collaboration can be established are critical for maximum exposure and also to better assist the manufacturing industry. The next meeting is scheduled at Mt. San Antonio College on November 20th. Eldon and Diane attended the CCCAOE conference. o Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson: (not in attendance) 1) We are still working on the TRIO program for the STEM Center and the Title 5 Graduation Initiative. Those are both due at the beginning of next year. We have the KECK Foundation application and Adult Ed report due the end of this month. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) On October 30, 2014 Star Van Buren attended the annual Women’s Business Conference in Newport Beach. The Women’s Business Conferences have excellent speakers and are a wonderful way to network with business owners and other agencies that help business owners. 2) On November 4th Star was a keynote speaker at the Board of Equalization (BOE); taking place at the Ken Miller Recreation Center in Torrance, CA. Chairman Horton was hosting the event along with co-hosts Senator Ted Lieu and Assembly Member Al Muratsuchi, City of Torrance and Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. The SBDC also had an exhibit table there. 3) On November 4th LauraLee Garinger (later joined by Star who had a commitment at the BOE event earlier) had an exhibitor table for the SBDC at the Connect2Met Bringing Public Sector Contracting Opportunities to Your Community. The event was hosted by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and member agencies of City of Torrance and West Basin Municipal Water District. It was held at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. The purpose of the event was to educate local businesses on how to do business with public agencies and to provide networking opportunities with purchasing department staff from a variety of public agencies, large private companies and business development resources partners. 4) On Thursday November 13, 2014 the SBDC is helping The Goldman Sachs 10k Small Business Program host a presentation at the Gardena Hotel in Gardena on Getting Social: How to Monetize Your Social Media. 5) We are also doing outreach to lenders in order to recruit clients who are in need of financial analysis and high level consulting resulting in financing, either a loan or private equity investors. 6) Workshops left for the month of November include Business Licenses, Corps & LLC’s, Nov. 13; How to Estimate Start-Up Costs and Cash Flow, Nov. 18; Small Business Orientation, Nov. 20th; Basics of Starting a Business, Nov. 20th and Marketing 101, Nov. 20th. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Terminal Island: Final year for Welding contract to begin 1/1/15, Instructor Henry Jackson. Parenting: 5-Year contract – Bid awarded to WpLRC - instructor Bobbie Lanham. Base year classes to resume on August 12th. 2) Metropolitan Detention Center: Parenting 5-Year contract – Bid awarded to WpLRC – Instructor Theresa Reed. Base year classes to resume December 1, 2014. Blueprint for Success – Instructor Theresa Reed. MDC to issue new contract. 3) Maritime Training: STCW-95: Fall Schedule sent out. STCW (Standards for Training, Certification & Watchkeeping) $50.00 price increase for Basic Fire Module. Class scheduled for October 20, 2014. Lifeboat Class: scheduled for November 3, 2014. Advanced Fire: scheduled for week of November 17th. Four at the Fire Academy and half day on the Lane Victory. Next class scheduled for December 8, 2014. Tankerman: Minimum of 5 students needed.
