EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes October 9, 2009 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Veronica Mendoza, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 p.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21. Review of Minutes from September 10, 2009 meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) Major focus this month is on the upcoming Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour taking place on Tuesday, October 20th from 3pm to 8pm in the Marsee Auditorium. Promotional material was distributed throughout campus and to businesses near campus. For more information, entrepreneurs may call 310973-3177 or go to www.elcamino.citd.org or www.southbaysbdc.org. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) Submitted a proposal to the Department of Labor for an American Recovery Act grant worth $2.4 million to develop a green manufacturing technologies program. The grant is for three years and will train 400 people. 2) Working on a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant worth $900,000 to develop aerospace curriculum resources. 3) The Aerospace Consortium project is going well; this consortium will link colleges with industry to provide training. Recently received $10,000 for participation. 4) The SB70 program started successfully with 100 students enrolled at ECC, Compton, and Cerritos. These are middle and high school students learning robotics, pre-engineering, and solidworks (3D technology). 5) There is a high probably that four CACT centers will be closed. Our CACT is not threatened. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: 1) The International Trade Compliance Institute (ITCI) website has been launched (http://www.tradecomplianceinstitute.org/) and we are currently in the process of receiving feedback to make it better. 2) New International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) training will start on October 22 nd under the ITCI training activities. Trainings planned for the next three months. Teledyne requested in-house training in November. 3) Attendance to the Export/Import orientations has increased. 1 4) Recently awarded a Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) grant, worth $392,000, for three years to increase export of green technology to China. We will be looking for a program coordinator. 5) Bronwen Madden is back from Nicaragua and reports that Miguel Murillo of UPOLI has become the Nicaraguan expert on export training. o Workforce Education: 1) Career Placement Services and Foster Care have moved to Enrollment Services as of October 1st. 2) CTE, Tech Prep, and VTEA will be moving over to the Business Division. o Contract Training – Maricela Vital: Employee Training Panel (ETP) 1) Modifications to our current ETP contract will allow us to offer center based training for large employers as well as establish training for hospitals. 2) A contract has been submitted for Board approval which will allow us to offer APICS classes to employers. Contract Education 1) The City of Torrance’s Customer Service Academy training has started with five additional cohorts. 2) Started classes that include Microsoft Office Suites and Progressive Discipline for select local companies. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: o WpLRC applied for a $2.4 million, 2-year, Pathway out of Poverty grant. It will provide local residents with training in green occupations and basic skills. o The CACCO Green Summit in Pasadena held October 6th and 7th was attended by Phil Sutton. o A proposal was submitted to Pacific Gateway for short-term training in Solar PV, Solar Thermal, and Weatherization. o WpLRC is in the process of offering a job placement service for those who have completed training in our workshops. Prisons 1) There are no classes going on at Terminal Island Correctional Facility. 2) LA Metro Detention Center’s current Parenting class will graduate November 2nd. Approval has been received to continue the classes for the next fiscal year. Maritime 1) Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for October 13th is full. The Lifeboat class for October has not been confirmed. The Medical Provider class scheduled for October 26 th may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Computer Lab 1) Lab will be training foster students in basic computer skills for four Saturdays beginning October 31st. 2 Discussion o State Budget: Things are not going to get any better next year with the State budget. However, business will pick up next year and we expect contract education to pick up. We’re excited that Paul Edward is on board. He’s strong in sales and knows how to position our products to our customers. o Grants: We are pursing every grant that makes sense and partnering with others on their grants. o Stimulus Projects: Pacific Gateway is asking for proposals for training using their stimulus funds that must be spent by June 2010. Other Issues Holiday Party: We will have a potluck luncheon at the Business Training Center on December 11th.
