EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes August 8, 2013 Present: Martha Aaron, Philip Sutton, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Megan Ruane, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 21. Review of Minutes from July 11 meeting Minutes approved as written with the exception that Angellah Petruso be noted as present. Department Updates o Career Pathways (CP)– Megan Ruane: 1) Summer Classes: Today is the last day for the summer classes. We had the WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership) MTT 101 class that graduated today with 16 students. They had their lunch and presentation of certificates. The ETEC12 course ended last week with 10 students. START program ended last week as well. They had 32 students. They went on fieldtrips to Northrop Grumman and the California Science Center. They had a robotics competition that went well and they were really excited about it. They had a little more involvement with the Women in Technology program this year. They were a little more involved with getting everything ready. Next semester there’s going to be a teacher over at DaVinci who will be teaching a Saturday robotics class here. They already have 10 students enrolled. 2) Career Enrollment: We have 40 sections in career enrollment this semester, more than double. We’ve added more at Hawthorne High School and CAMS has about 12. A new casual worker was hired to help with going to the schools and getting things done. 3) Career Advancement Academy: We are recruiting for this as well for the Machine Tool and Welding. For Welding we may have over 20 students. Went to the Hobbit, for those who are homeless or have gotten out of jail and are in rehab. 15 students will be coming to take a tour of the welding lab. Naomi went to talk to First Step about children who have out grown the Foster Youth program. Two are interested in the welding program. Hawthorne High School is doing a Manufacturing Day on October 5th to display all their manufacturing. It will be held at Hawthorne High. They’re also going to be hosting a VEX competition with 15 high schools. OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) 10 and Tool U went very well. They will have Tool U again in the fall. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) – Darling Garcia: 1) Successfully closed out the summer courses at Compton and ECC. 2) Officially closed out the Hub and CACT grants. 3) Initializing work on the Deputy Sector Navigator grant. 4) Initializing training scheduling activities for the Mentor Protégé grant. 5) Continue to work on the WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership) and H1-B grants. 6) Will start a Six Sigma Black Belt exam prep course tomorrow (for profit) o Center for International Trade Development (CITD) – Martha Aaron: 1) Hong Kong Food Expo is next week. 2) STEP (State Trade and Export Promotion) MDP (Market Development Program) activities. 3) Governor’s Office meeting today on the new tax credit programs (enterprise zones replaced by three new credits). 4) Analyzing tradeshows that align with our regional export plan. 5) Collecting success stories under the STEP program. 6) Planning and promoting an AES (Automated Export System) seminar August 22 and 23. 1 o o o o 7) Speaking at the Africa Growth and Economic Development Conference at USC. 8) Speaking at the Legal Ports event in Long Beach in September (for the Port of Los Angeles). 9) Continuing to update the STEP (State Trade and Export Promotion) website and process registrants. 10) NASBITE meeting preparations – arranging two keynote speakers for the annual conference in the spring. Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: Not present Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital: 1) ETP ET12-0143 Two-Year Contract: The term of the contract will end in October of this year. 2) ETP ET11-0806 AB-118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Contract: We were awarded a new contract for $375,000. The term is 08/05/13-08/04/15. Contracts to training partners (Cerritos, College of the Desert, Long Beach CCD, City College of San Francisco and San Diego Miramar College). We are in the process of sending out certification statements. 3) ETP ET13-0125 Two-Year Contract: Our training partners have customers participating in training. Two Blueprint Reading and Shop Measurement classes conclude in September. 4) ETP New Core Two-Year Contract: An application for a new contract has been submitted to ETP. It is being reviewed. Contract Education: 5) SQL (Structured Query Language) training continues. DDI (Development Dimensions International) training continues through this month. Other Activity: 6) Breonca Johnson has joined our department as a student worker. 7) Our Department will participate in the California Human Resource Conference in Anaheim on August 26 and 27 that is sponsored by PIHRA (Professionals in Human Resources Association). 8) The catalog is finished. The next step is the website. Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – Laura Garinger: 1) Star will be attending the ASBDC annual conference in September in Orlando, Florida. 2) We have numerous workshops coming up. How to Estimate Start-Up Costs on 8/13; Choosing & Forming Corporations & LLCs on 8/15 to be held in Torrance at our sub-center on Satori Avenue; and Business Licensing and Permits on 8/22. We have re-occurring Small Business Orientation workshops every Thursday to introduce new clients who want to start a business to the SBDC. The Small Business Orientation is also offered 2 times a month on Tuesday evenings for those who cannot attend the Thursday morning workshop. We are working on adding more workshops to our September venue. 3) Martha Cisneros will be coming back this month. Nancy Cisneros will be back in September. Workplace Learning Resource Center (WpLRC) – Maryann Cohan: 1) Terminal Island: We have three 5-year contracts with them that will end September 30, 2013. Parenting will also be ending but should be put on the website for bidding for upcoming classes. Welding is ongoing until September 30, 2014. The Job Fair will be held August 28, 2013. This requires 20 hours of prep work for the inmates before they attend the Job Fair. 2) Metropolitan Detention Center: Parenting ongoing. We received a contract for Blueprint for Success to begin in September. 3) STCW (Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping): August 20th class full; Lifeboat class scheduled for September 17th; Disney Cruise Lines will return for class September 11-12, 2013. Pool usage will be at Lucky Duck Swim Club on Marine Avenue. 4) Effective February 1, 2013 all workers who tend to off-shore rigs must have fire training. Several individuals are waiting for an Advanced Fire Class. 2 5) Vessel Security Officer: Roberto is making changes to comply with Maritime Transportation Security & Administration (MTSA). Until then, unable to hold classes. 6) STCW 3-day Refresher Course: Curriculum is being prepared to submit to USCG (United States Coast Guard) for new class. The STCW certification expires after 5 years, however, if seafarers have enough sea time they can take the 3-day Refresher instead of the 5-day class. 7) Our STCW Basic Safety Certification from USCG expires August 31st. We have forwarded the necessary paperwork to the USGC and await their approval. 8) We have a concurrent enrollment class at Leuzinger High School to teach Environmental Tech I. This is part of the CTE Hub grant. 9) We got the Deputy Sector Navigator Grant for Retail Hospitality. Won’t be getting money until October. Discussion Picnic: Scheduled for August 24th.
