Meeting Notes
August 11, 2010
Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hess, Roberto Pandolfi,
Maricela Vital
A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at
1:30 p.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21.
Review of Minutes from July 14th meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Karen Hess, Tech Prep:
1) Dorsey, The Gen Y Guy, will be the speaker at the November 5th conference.
We are collaborating with SB70 STEM (Science, Technology Engineering &
Mathematics) Teacher Pipeline to leverage funds for this event.
2) MTT46 Summer Camp funded by SB747 is wrapping up. Twenty one
students were taken on tour of Jet Propulsion Laboratory and also bused to
Compton Center’s Aero Fasteners Open House. Each received a tool kit
filled with tools. Six students were tested and NIMS (National Institute for
Metalworking Skills) certified.
3) El Segundo Unified School District and DaVinci High School became
transmitting CALPASS Partners.
4) Engineering Program of Study (POS) was created with SoCal ROC and
approved.
5) For October 16th, planning Real Estate Seminar from “finance to white picket
fence” in conjunction with the State Real Estate Education Center. They will
be on-line seminars. It is geared toward Career and Technical Education
students in the Real Estate Career Pathway.
6) The IWITS (Institute of Women in Trades, Technology and Science)
Conference will be held in Oakland on October 5th.
7) We continue developing Sustainability Career Pathway (Green) with
Centinela Valley Unified School District and Workplace Learning Resource
Center.
8) Continuing collaboration with Compton Center. They picked up the UCLA
Summer CEED (Center for Early Education and Development) Program
taught by Manny Villaroman in Robotics.
9) Developing with the Business Division the International Business Career
Pathway with Centinela Valley Unified School District’s Maria Eborn, teacher,
advocate and champion. Working to articulate CIS 30 and BA 91.

o Organizational Training and Development – Maricela Vital:
ETP Training
1) Completed all training on ETP ET9-0204 contract.
2) ECC was awarded $411,514 under the Green ETP Contract ET10-0711.
Training has started.
3) ETP conducted final audit by telephone to review the ET07-231 contract.
4) Expecting next ETP audit for Contract ET09-0240 to occur in October.
Contract Education
1) The City of Torrance Core Customer Service Academy is currently on their
fifth training session. One cohort will be for their Fire Department. We have
received their schedule for classes starting in the fall.
o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:
1) The Youth Entrepreneur Program (YEP) grant from the Chancellor’s Office
was approved for extension through December. Remaining funds will be
spent assisting CITD with their International Business Practice Firm Program
at local high schools, and providing advising and NxLevel classes to eligible
young adults. We are also considering joining the Collegiate Entrepreneurs
Organization in order to promote entrepreneurship on campus.
2) We have submitted a request to be a satellite location for the Business
Entrepreneurship Program funded by the Chancellor’s Office.
3) The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program is underway with
training starting August 24th. Three El Camino College SBDC clients were
selected to participate in the program. The LA Network SBDC’s helped
recruit clients for Long Beach City College who was awarded the program by
Goldman Sachs.
4) The SBDC, along with CACT and CITD, are partnering to offering an in-depth
training program to area manufacturers to help position them to become
contractors. The program combines our Business Boot Camp 12-week
training program with two 8-hour seminars that cover import/export and ITAR
(International Traffic in Arms Regulations) requirements along with lean
manufacturing and supply chain topics.
Workplace Learning Resource Center – Roberto Pandolfi:
Terminal Island
1) AutoCad base year finishing up. Second year to start January 2011.
2) Photovoltaic class will be offered through solicitation on-line. We will be
bidding for the contract.
3) Parenting program at Terminal Island will be completed by September.
4) Welding Contract has been awarded.
South Bay Center for Counseling
1) Awarded $33,600 for training.
Maritime Training
1) STCW training will start August 24th.
2) Lifeboat training will start September 14th.
3) Waiting for response for Disney Cruise Line training.

4) Have a barge lined up for Tankerman training.
5) Port of Los Angeles wants us to provide STCW training for crews.
Metropolitan Detention Center
1) Parenting classes ongoing.
Discussion
o State Budget: There is no approved State budget.
o New Director of Contract and Community Education: Starting September 7th.
Has good background in contract education and on the academic side.
o Mileage & Travel Reimbursement: These need to be turned in no later than
10 days after month end. Time Sheets: Time sheets need signatures on all
signature lines.
