EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes January 4, 2010 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Kerry Bonner, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hess, Roberto Pandolfi, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 8:30 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21. Review of Minutes from November 6, 2009 meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: 1) Working on three Economic Workforce Development (EWD) grant proposals (Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT), Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) and Rapid Training Fund (RTF)) to be submitted by February. 2) Working on quarterly reports for all projects. 3) Recently submitted for a third CTE grant for year 2011. 4) New equipment for the fasteners program has been delivered to Compton. 5) Setting up aircraft structures program at Compton. 6) Awaiting response from the Department of Labor regarding $2,000,000 grant proposal submitted in October. o Tech Prep – Karen Hess: 1) Forming career cluster groups to develop programs of study and articulation. Need more one-on-one interaction. Put together groups in Graphic Arts, Film and Video; working with Auto Body. Branching out from Engineering into other divisions. 2) Working on May 27th conference for educators and counselors. Jim Brazell will be the main speaker. The venue is currently scheduled in the Campus Theatre but it could be moved to Marsee Auditorium. 3) Preparing for advisory board meetings for next year. 4) Los Angeles Regional is using their funds to put on events this year. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: 1) Starting 10-week U.S. Customs Broker Exam prep course on January 19th. 2) Organizing the next International Trade Compliance Institute (ITCI) advisory board meeting scheduled for January 13th. 3) Marketing import/export orientations. 4) Developing new training programs under ITCI. 1 Green Export Enabler Program – Kerry Bonner: 5) Advisory board will be held on January 12th. Two ex officio members will be on the board. 6) Our goal is to get 25 companies to take part in our 7-step program to help get their product export ready and shipped to China. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: 1) Attended the year end regional network luncheon in Altadena on December 9th. Received two awards; one for being the most valuable center and the other for obtaining the most jobs created for the year. 2) The majority of the month spent renewing contracts for counselors. o Contract & Employment Training Panel (ETP) Training – Maricela Vital: 1) Paul Edward continually working to recruit new companies for training services. 2) ETP has been slow in December. A couple of companies did have training. 3) An amendment to the ETP contract now allows training for hotels and hospitals. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, Roberto Pandolfi: o Job Placement – Denise DiPasquale: 1) Trying to assist individuals who have taken classes under WpLRC to find jobs by helping them with resumes and interviewing skills. 2) Phil Sutton meeting with Tanya Carter at Centinela Valley School District to discuss classes for resume writing, interviewing skills, etc. 3) Computer Lab: Working with Pacific Gateway to provide training under grant for computer and office automation. This will keep Computer Lab busy for quite some time. Computer training on Saturdays for Foster children has been postponed over the holidays. 4) Went to Green Coalition meeting involving 90-95 members of the community. o Prisons – Roberto Pandolfi: 1) Terminal Island is currently trying to get funds to conduct wheelchair repair and solar classes. The Parenting class will start January 7th. A meeting date is being discussed as the warden would like to visit our facility. The next Job Fair will be held in April. AutoCad will start in the Spring. 2) Victorville is waiting for solar training. 3) Detention Center Parenting class started December 28th. o South Bay Center for Counseling 1) Still waiting for contract to be signed to release funds for training. o Maritime Training 1) Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for January 9th and the Lifeboat class is scheduled for January 12th. 2) A Coast Guard inspection will take place at our facility on January 19 th. 2 3) The Medical Provider class will be held on January 25th. 4) Working on final outstanding audit issues for the Vessel Security Officer training program. o Community Education: 1) New catalogs out earlier this year than in the past. Starting out the year really well. 2) New on-line survey has been updated. Needed to better understand likes and dislikes of individuals taking classes. 3) Planning Kids College 2010. Everything will be held on campus this year. 4) Summer Adult Class Request for Proposals went out. 5) 2nd Annual Young @ Heart event is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 nd. Discussion o State Budget: Shortfall is $14-20 billion for 18 month projection. Governor’s budget revise will be made on January 8th. Looking at a job bill that has money in it for training and education. o Re-bid for EWD: We now have to be competitive for our center. We will know a lot more on January 8th. It is important now more than ever that we go after revenue generating projects. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 9:30am 3
