Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. The Specialist, Library Applications, develops, modifies, tests, implements and supports library computer and web applications and provides primary administration and support for these and various assigned 3rd party applications. Reporting to Information Technology (IT) and in compliance with IT standards and protocols, the position works directly with and receives work assignments and priorities from library administration to develop and support library applications. The position reports to the Manager, PeopleSoft Projects within IT. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Programming • Provide computer programming and program maintenance using computer languages in use by IT including MS Visual Studio, stored procedures, source control, Unified Modeling Language and other tools • Modify, test, implement and support computer applications in accordance with the software development life cycle • Convert user specifications into working data models 30% - Administration and Support of Vendor Applications Install, configure, support and maintain vendor and Libraries’ developed applications Work with Information Technology and Libraries’ departments and with vendors to troubleshoot technical problems or bugs with applications and related devices Communicate and coordinate application installations, upgrades and resolution of issues with end-users and with other Information Technology and Libraries’ personnel such as database, web, system, and security administrators Collaborate with co-workers to provide additional coverage in the areas of application support Prepare and maintain a variety of documents for technical and non-technical audiences; i.e., application logs with bugs and issues and their solutions, restoration procedures as part of disaster recovery plans, technical architecture and data interfaces Perform data analysis and develop automated procedures to exchange data between applications, as needed 20% - End User Support • Work directly with end users to define system specifications • Provide end-user support • Communicate with co-workers and supervisors on project status and issues • Assist in the evaluation and purchase of new software applications Position Description – Specialist, Library Applications Page 3 3. Level of Freedom The Specialist, Library Applications, works with the Libraries’ technology team on project planning. The Specialist makes decisions in translating the functional specifications of users to technical specifications. Problem solving skills are utilized in developing requirements, testing and troubleshooting user problems. Resource allocation decisions are made in conjunction with the Library Administration and technology team management. Impact The position is a mid-level programming and applications management position requiring independent judgment. Programming and applications management decisions, judgments, and performance affect the overall quality of the computer applications, the ease with which other programmers can modify or maintain these programs, and how these programs will integrate with other campus applications. Poor performance directly impacts the Libraries’ operations and the success of faculty and students in finding and using library and information resources. 4.
