1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Specialist, Marketing and Public Relations, is responsible for planning, implementing, managing,
and evaluating all aspects of communication, public information, marketing, and media relations for
the Southern Area University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE). Major functions include
assessing needs of the area relating to communications and public information and planning,
developing, and implementing media and public information campaigns to publicize educational
programs (i.e., news conferences, special events, press releases, public service announcements,
Internet communication, fliers, and invitations). The Specialist is the primary point of contact and
coordinator for all publications, meetings, appearances, and interviews with all Southern Area
broadcast systems. The position serves as a member of the Southern Area’s Administrative
Committee responsible for the overall decisions affecting Southern Area Extension. The Specialist
reports to the Southern Area Director.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

40% - Faculty and Staff Assistance and Training
 Assists faculty and staff to develop, market, and publicize education programs to targeted
audiences
 Assists faculty and staff to develop high quality communications materials, including print
pieces, videos, and displays to support their educational programs
 Conducts media training, writing training, and other appropriate communication training for
faculty and staff
 Provides leadership and respond to requests to, and prepares all marketing requests from
Southern Area faculty and staff utilizing established guidelines
 Maintains Southern Area complete fact sheet system
 Assists faculty and staff with the editorial development of Web pages
30% - Media and Public Relations
 Plans, develops, and implements media and advertising campaigns to publicize educational
programs (i.e., news conferences, special events, press releases, Public Service
Announcements (PSAs), fliers
 Maintains a positive working relationship with all southern Area media outlets
25% - Marketing
 Facilitates information exchange to and from the Area to the University and the general public
 Makes oral presentations and public appearances
 Develops appropriate materials to publicize and/or account to various audiences, including the
University, community leaders, county officials, media volunteers, and taxpayers for the
success/accomplishments of education programs
5% - Policy Development and Implementation
 Works jointly with and as an integral part of the southern Area Administrative Committee and
faculty in the design, development, and implementation of policies and procedures affecting
the overall operation of the Southern Area

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The UNCE has the mission to discover, develop, disseminate, produce, and use knowledge to
improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of individuals. Program initiatives may be
in response to local, state, and/or national issues, requiring a knowledgeable and capable analysis in
soliciting favorable public support. The Specialist has delegated authority from the Southern Area
Director in marketing and public relations communications. The individual works closely with the Area
Director on decisions associated with the position, but must work independently, with initiative, and
with high latitude in decision-making.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments could have a significant impact on the effectiveness and overall functioning
of Cooperative Extension Southern Area. Poor judgment or mismanaged information could jeopardize
Federal, state, and/or county funding with serious consequences to new, existing, and continued
programs. The judgments of and decisions made by this position impact the unit’s ability to provide
quality programs and services which are critical to attracting and maintaining customers.
