1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Specialist, Web, reports to the Web Development Librarian responsible for coordinating the
University Libraries’ web presence. The position is responsible for the ongoing technical management, updating, and repair of all server-side and client-side code on which the L ibraries’ website is built. This includes routine maintenance and content upkeep as well as design and quality assurance activities. The position maintains public access to the databases underlying the Libra ries’ various web services. The individual works closely with the Web Development Librarian to implement new aspects of the website, such as new pages, new functionalities, and new design.

70% - Website Programming, Development and Maintenance
Update and repair server-side and client-side code on which library website is built
Assist with maintenance of and public access to databases underlying Li brary’s various web services and 3 rd party applications
Maintain and execute content and graphic elements on the website including: troubleshooting, optimizing efficiency and performance, updating content, images and photos
Assist with establishment of web-related policies and procedures
Participate in web development to create standards-based websites from approved website designs including accessible and efficient templates and style sheets
Collaborate with other Library and Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) staff in a teambased environment to complete department projects
Ensure appropriate levels of security and encryption protocols
Code sites to communicate with databases and integrate images, text, video and sound
Test and ensure web pages are functional with different browser types
20% - Web Design
Convert third-party images, stock photos and provided photos to web-ready images
Draft designs for new pages and/or website functions for input and approval by the Web
Development Librarian
Provide ideas, suggestions, mock-ups and prototypes on page layout, content organization and navigation
Utilize web design concepts for efficient navigation and user-friendly interactions
10% - Project Development and Quality Assurance
Engage colleagues to assess web communications needs, discuss options and solutions
Contribute input on the integration of web-based applications
Perform quality assurance tasks relating to website projects
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Web Specialist works with the Web Development Librarian and other Library staff to create and implement specific goals and strategies. The position is responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the

The position has the freedom to make necessary formatting, presentation, and editorial decisions in order to make the website more effective provided they fall within the established direction. The supervisor is consulted with on overall project goals and deadlines.
Impact:
The purview of this position extends to all aspects of the library web presence. Performance has a large impact on the success of students, faculty and other visitors to the Libraries’ website in finding information and services to support learning and research. The Libraries’ website is the primary access point to books, journals, electronic databases, historical archives and other research materials. It is the vehicle via which users may renew Library materials, reserve a group study room, or make a donation. Failure to perform well will result in user frustration and inability to find accurate information. As an outreach and communication tool, the Library web affects the perception of the
Library and the University by virtual visitors, including the local community, potential donors, prospective students, and others.

Knowledge of:
HTML, CSS, JavaScript (including AJAX), PHP, and XML
ASP.NET web application framework and either C# and VB
JQuery JavaScript library
Light PHP scripting
SQL and MS SQL Server (or similar relational database management systems)
Data modeling and database design and security concepts
Web application engineering and debugging
ASP.NET Master Pages
CONTENTdm digital collection management software
Design software, such as Flash, InDesign
Content management system, such as Drupal
Skills:
ADO.NET, binding data to ASP.NET web controls, or otherwise reading data from an SQL result set and displaying it within a web page
WordPress customization in a multi-user environment
Website localization, particularly achieving localization goals with ASP.NET
Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator
Ability to:

Communicate with constituents not familiar with web design and technologies
Work in a diverse, team-based environment
Troubleshoot problems related to web design and functionality; work with other team members to troubleshoot problems
