Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Specialist, Applications, provides primary administration and support for assigned vendor applications. The position reports to the Manager, Applications Support in the department of Computing and Telecommunications, in support of department and/or college vendor and third-party applications. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 70% - Administration and Support of Vendor Applications Install, configure, support and maintain vendor applications and their associated devices such as handhelds or point of sale terminals Work with departments/colleges and vendors to troubleshoot technical problems or bugs with vendor applications and related devices Communicate and coordinate application installations, upgrades and resolution of issues with end-users and with other Information Technology personnel such as database, system and security administrators 20% - Collaboration and Back-up Services Collaborate with co-workers to provide additional coverage in the areas of application support Prepare and maintain a variety of documents for technical and non-technical audiences; i.e., application logs with bugs and issues and their solutions, restoration procedures as part of disaster recovery plans, technical architecture and data interfaces Perform data analysis and develop automated procedures to exchange data between applications, as needed 10% - Departmental Planning and Project Development Communicate with co-workers and supervisors on project status and issues Assist in the evaluation and purchase of new software applications 3. Level of Freedom: The Specialist, Applications has primary responsibility and autonomous decision making for the installation, configuration, ongoing maintenance, and user support for assigned applications. Within established protocols and IT best practices, autonomy and independent action are required in order to maximize utility of the applications, limit downtime, and assist user satisfaction and success. Impact: Decisions affect the stability, performance, and integrity of applications, which in turn affect faculty and staff productivity and ability to perform their jobs. Daily administration of applications affects faculty and staff throughout the university, and may significantly impact the success of departments/ colleges in in providing services, meeting deadlines, etc. Position Description – Specialist, Applications Page 3 4. Knowledge of: SQL SQL Server and/or Oracle Client-server and web architecture Microsoft PC and server products Skills: Communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to communicate technical information in manner that a non-technical person can understand Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (WordPerfect, Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email) Ability to: Install, configure, support and maintain a wide-variety of vendor software Read and follow vendor documentation (docs, knowledge bases, etc.) for the installation, configuration and trouble-shooting of application errors Demonstrate initiative and work independently Respond quickly to minimize down time and resolve application problems whenever they occur 5.
