1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The purpose of this limited term position of Manager, University Research Data, is to pilot a university
data management program to organize, support and provide access to university faculty research
data and to prepare recommendations that establish requirements for the organization, function and
on-going management of the program. The position reports to the Dean of University Libraries.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

50% - Manage Data Pilot Program
 In consultation with IT, establish Sharepoint requirements and configuration
 In consultation with Library faculty, identify appropriate metadata schema
 Recruit faculty participants
 Load and manage data files
 Develop protocols for contributions
20% - Investigate Campus Data Management
 Interview faculty about research data needs; collect and organize information on researcher
experience
 Determine and document faculty and institutional constraints
 Investigate compliance issues and privacy and confidentiality requirements
20% - Investigate Outside Options
 Review and evaluate commercial products
 Recommend solution to senior management
10% - Develop Long-Term Strategy
 Write project summary
 Prepare recommendations for ongoing data management program
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Manger is directly responsible for the investigation, development, and execution of the pilot
project to establish a university research management program. In addition, the position is
responsible for the preparation of recommendations for an ongoing data management program
including needs assessment, collection strategies, organization and metadata schemas, equipment
and software requirements, compliance and security requirements, etc. The Manager consults with
university faculty, Library and IT professionals in data gathering and decision making and operates
with general direction from the Dean of Libraries, Vice President for Research and Innovation, and
Chief Information Officer.

Impact:
Errors in judgment, poor performance or failure to execute may negatively affect access to research
and participation in the nascent program. As a result, the university may fail to meet compliance
requirements resulting in the loss of future grants and contracts. Validity of and access to research
data of university faculty would be affected, negatively impacting the credibility of research at the
university.

Knowledge of:
 Data use and management needs of researchers
 Principles of data management including file structure
 Grant process and general granting agency requirements and compliance issues
 State and Federal laws and regulations relating to position, i.e., Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Educational Rights and privacy Act (FERPA) and other
data protection and confidentiality requirements
Skills:





Project management
Organization and meticulous attention to detail
Effective verbal and written communication
Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in collaborative
environments and one-on-one with diverse faculty and researchers
Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email) and specifically
with standard business productivity and specialized software
Ability to:
 Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
 Maintain professional business and work ethics and standards
 Work with diverse populations and be sensitive to gender, disabilities, and cultural and ethnic
