MAKING ORDINARY TIME EXTRAORDINARY Dear Parishioners, Summer is a blessed season—a period of relaxation and slowing down, and an especially fruitful time to enrich prayer life. The liturgical calendar also transitions from Pentecost into Ordinary time. At Pentecost we are showered with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit—Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (right judgment), Knowledge, Fortitude (courage), Piety (reverence), and Fear of the Lord (wonder and awe). As you journey through summer, the Spiritual Life Commission would like to offer you a simple prayer “exercise” that we hope might make this Ordinary time extraordinary. Inspired by the Spirit’s grace, we invite you to consider how these seven wonderful gifts are at work in your life by reflecting on a series of Ignatian Examen-style questions, based on the individual gifts. We will be providing the exercises in the Bulletin every other week as well as on the parish website. To deepen the experience, consider connecting with a spiritual “companion” or forming a small group with whom to share the movements of the Spirit as summer progresses. Imagine yourselves as disciples in Luke’s Emmaus gospel (Luke 24:13-35), journeying together, reflecting on the mystery of the Resurrection and how the various gifts of Christ’s Spirit solidify our oneness in Him. Without a doubt, you are bound to meet Jesus on the way! Blessings, The Spiritual Life Commission Knowledge The gift I seek: I pray for Knowledge, which enables me to see the realities of this world—particularly the painful things—through God’s eyes. May the Spirit lead me to seek God in all that is good, true, and beautiful, and may I be favored with the Light that dispels the darkness of doubt and ignorance. Reflection: • In what ways is the gift of Knowledge alive in me, helping to discern God’s teaching and the ability to distinguish good from evil? • Do I see all that I am and have, and all that happens to me and others, in the Light of the Holy Spirit? • How have I been challenged to know God’s true will for me? • How can I use my Spirit-given knowledge to improve the lives of others in my family, my community, my parish, the world? Prayer I thank you, Holy Spirit, for your Word. Make it a living reality in my life—a constant guide at my side, a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. Let it mold my mind and shape my heart into the image of Christ, my Lord and in conformity to your holy will. Amen. Sinceramente, Padre Bob 4.
