Mrs. Wick's 5th Grade Friday Notes
January 27, 2012
Cultural Fair was once
again a memorable
day thanks to all the
parents who helped out in a
myriad of ways, including
presenters, Border Patrol, and set
up/clean up. Students learned a
lot about the countries they
visited as they traveled with
passport in hand. This is a great
culmination to our World
History studies and our Country
research and Prezi
presentations.

Gist on Geography
Students’ Prezi projects on
their chosen country were
beautifully made and
presented. So many skills
were strengthened:
research, organization of
material, technology, time
management, note-taking,
public speaking….. Not to
mention all they learned
from each other about the
countries! Students did a
great job with this
independent, in-class
project.
The Hype on History
This week we learned about our
acquisition of the Oregon
territory as well as the War with
Mexico and Americans settling
the Far West. Students will take
the Westward Expansion Test
Wednesday. Students are
currently working on the unit
Study Guide in preparation for
this test. We will then begin our
look at the causes of the
American Civil War
starting with the issue
of slavery. We have
many exciting activities
planned for this unit.
Memos on Math
We have nearly finished Ch. 5,
Data and Graphing, in
preparation for Science Fair.
We have learned about mean,
median, mode, and range as
well as creating stem & leaf
plots and reading graphs. Test
Tuesday.
Scoop on Science
Students enjoyed using
the microscopes this week
in two labs. Students
looked at prepared slides of
a myriad of amazing things.
The following day, they made their
own slides of onion skin and
viewed them under the
microscopes.
Monday, students will be
making cheek cell slides to
view. We really do need an
extra pair of hands for this lab
– no experience necessary!
(11:20-12:00)
Science Fair: Students are now
entering the testing phase of their
Science Fair project. Students have
2 weeks to complete this phase.
All data is due on Feb. 7, though
students may turn in data next
week (1/31) if they have it
completed.
Please remember it is the parent’s
responsibility to check the student’s
work for completion and quality
before they sign (no initials,
please) the timeline in the Journal.
Lots About Language Arts
Language: We are currently
working on our persuasive writing
skills as we write about the War
with Mexico. We’ll continue with
persuasive writing skills next
week.
Reading: We continue to enjoy
Tom Sawyer . This classic novel
contains so many wonderful
lessons on character while it tells a
wonderful and engaging story.
Spelling: List 18, homographs,
(permit, permit) next week.
