We have learned about equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, mixed numbers, and comparing and ordering fractions and mixed numbers. Using IXL (skills L.1-L.7) to review and practice these concepts will help your child be successful with these skills. The Hype on History We have begun our unit on Westward Expansion. We have discussed Daniel Boone crossing the Appalachians and Lewis and Clark's expedition to explore the west. Students were able to use their netbooks to participate in an interactive adventure with Lewis and Clark. We also watched the National Geographic IMAX film about Lewis and Clark. We also learned about Tecumseh and the resistance from Native Americans. This unit includes many songs that we’re learning and singing in class Later in the year, we’ll participate in an all-5th Westward Expansion program produced by Mrs. Adams. Scoop on Science We have begun our unit on Cell Biology with a look at animal and plant cells, including text, Smartboard, video, and lab activities. Students will turn in the bibliography and hypothesis next week (pgs.8-9). Please remember to review their work for quality and completeness before you sign the timeline. Students have been advised to finish the work early to allow you the opportunity to do this. Report Card Time! Report cards are enclosed in this Friday folder. Please review the report card with your child to discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. This is a great age for selfreflection and ownership! Gist on Geography Students are currently preparing a Prezi project on a country they have researched in class. Tech trainers from the district have been teaching us this new presentation program. Projects will be presented beginning Tuesday, January 24th. I encourage you to come view our presentations. Our culminating event, Cultural Fair, is Jan. 27th. Lots About Language Arts Reading: We have begun reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and are thoroughly enjoying Tom’s antics. We read from both the unabridged and abridged versions of the novel as well as periodically enjoy listening to the story on CD. Spelling: Don’t forget the 5th Grade Spelling Bee is Tuesday for those who wish to participate. Lists were made available in class and are also available on our classroom website on the ‘Documents’ page.
