Verse 17 refers back to 1 Peter 1:17, where we are warned that God judges everyone according to our deeds. How does being disciplined as believers relate to God’s judgment? See 1 Corinthians 11:32 and Hebrews 12:4-8. Is persecution part of that judgment? Review What point from this Sunday’s message and Bible verses caught your attention or challenged you? Explore 1. Apparently, the Christians addressed in 1 Peter 4:12 were surprised at being persecuted (the word for surprised literally means bewildered astonishment). Read John 15:20 & 16:33 and 1 John 3:13. What are some reasons why we are surprised by suffering? 2. 1 Peter 4:13 tells us to rejoice at participating in Christ’s sufferings. See also Romans 8:17 and Philippians 3:10. What do these verses mean to you? 4. How do you interpret the statement in verse 18 that it is difficult for the righteous to be saved? 5. Peter closes this chapter by telling Christians who suffer for the Lord to commit themselves to God and do good works. What does this mean in practice? What are the benefits for the believer?
