Monday 1st June
Welcome back to the final term of your child’s first year at Greatfield Park Primary. It
seems to have flown by and we are very proud of everything your child has already achieved
to date.
This term we have two topic areas. These will be:
‘The Only Way Is Up!’ We will be thinking about our personal history, celebrating our
uniqueness, changes and preparing for the next stage of school going into Year 1.
‘Are We Nearly There?’ We will be thinking about holidays, the seaside and finding out
about the world around us and making comparisons of places.
In the Prime Areas of learning:
PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development)
This term we will enjoy and celebrate our own and each other’s special, unique
achievements. We will think about the changes in our lives we have experienced and
prepare for the exciting changes ahead when the children move into Year 1. This will be
done in a positive way and should your child have any worries, these will be addressed with
care. The children will be encouraged to speak, respond and play together with sensitivity
and awareness to others feelings. There will be lots of opportunity to share, discuss and
find out about topics and interests including holidays, photos, places and family occasions.
Friendships, good behaviour and personal goals will be celebrated and shared together.
PD (Physical Development)
Lots of opportunity to use accurate fine motor skills including cutting, assembling, folding,
connecting and of course writing will be used on a daily basis. For the budding model
makers and creators, you will be pleased to know that the ‘making table’ will continue to give
open opportunities to design, make and review something which has been carefully crafted.
The children will be moulding and shaping clay into seaside themed works of art. We will be
creating two dances which will be performed at the summer school fayre. With our wooded
area fully cleared and ready, we will be enjoying some summer learning outside. We will talk
about the importance of how and why we need to stay safe in the sun.
CLL (Communication and Language)
The Learning Journeys will continue until the end of the Foundation Stage Year and we will
look back at where it all began in September! The children will be encouraged to speak with
confidence to their peers and value theirs and others experiences. There will be lots of
Seaside stories, poems and descriptions to inspire creative art work and writing. The role
play area will be a seaside café where the children can interact together and pretend be on
holiday!
In the Specific Areas of learning:
Literacy- Read Write Inc will continue daily with both reading and writing skills being
constantly reinforced. The children will be encouraged to write with more independence
using word spaces, capitals, simple punctuation and practicing their phonics skills in all
curriculum areas. These will include writing postcards, holiday lists, menus, poems, posters,
personal anecdotes and descriptions.
Once again writing and reading will take place in and
outdoors, to promote these skills at all times. The children will be encouraged to use simple
punctuation and begin to use more expression to give real meaning and excitement to their
reading. If you have any seaside or holiday stories please bring these in clearly named
so that we can share them together.
Mathematics –Number formation, recognition and ordering up to 20 and beyond will be
practised daily. The children will learn number doubles and practise halving given amounts
fairly. Addition and subtraction will continue with opportunities of real life problem solving
and appropriate recording using formal symbols and showing clear presentation. In the role
play area, we will practise using money, recognising coinage and using language associated
with money amounts. We will further investigate capacity and weight. Using the children’s
own history, we will practise time sequencing and ordering of events with appropriate ‘time’
language.
Understanding the World- We will share our Learning Journeys and reflect on the events
of the last year, our favourite times, achievements and new goals for the future. The newly
cleared forest area will give great opportunities for artwork, animal and season
investigating, language, maths and new friendships bonds to be discovered. We will share
experiences of holidays, seaside trips and places locally or further afield we have visited.
We will compare localities looking for similarities and differences, like and dislikes. Using
the Laptops and Learn Pads, the children will be introduced to a selection of exciting new
age appropriate software.
Expressive Arts and Design- In the role play area, the children will be able to buy an ice
cream or order their favourite lunch time snack in our Seaside Café. There will be lots of
seaside themed artwork including mosaic fish, beach huts, seashell observational drawings
and clay work. The class will have a very special moment when they perform their practised
dances for the Summer School Fayre.
In the forest area we will play our made percussion
instruments and sing our favourite songs.
