Specification
ICT Systems Administrator
Salary:
£27,094 - £28,764 pa inclusive
Hours:
36 hours per week
Leave:
25 days per annum
Reports to:
Infrastructure Manager
Works closely with: Infrastructure Manager, IT Engineers, DBA, Head of Student MIS,
college staff including teaching and support staff and managers, and
students.
Location:
This post will initially be based at the Main Campus, Isleworth. The post
holder will be required to travel occasionally to the College’s Skills
Centre in Feltham.
The purpose of the post is: to assist the Infrastructure Manager with managing the college
IT systems & network and to provide a comprehensive and robust IT support service for all
staff and students within West Thames College.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Actively monitor and maintain network and server performance, ensuring system
hardware and software updates / upgrades are identified and reported. Identify
inefficiencies and advise the Infrastructure Manager and Head of IS.
2. Install and configure new hardware including servers, network switches and related
network devices.
3. Responsible for the maintenance and administration of various software or
application servers, making sure that hardware and software are updated and that
these systems are functional and performing to a high standard.
4. With the Infrastructure Manager, you will be responsible for the daily data backup
procedures and ensure that they are carried out regularly in accordance with agreed
policies and procedures.
5. Responsible for the testing, packaging, and deployment of software over the LAN
and create and regularly update cloned software images. You will also be required to
investigate, purchase and deploy new software, liaising with college staff and
software vendors where appropriate.
6. Responsible for the management and maintenance of the college software
inventories and related documentation ensuring that licence agreements are strictly
adhered to.
7. With the Infrastructure Manager, you will be responsible for the daily network and
systems administration including User accounts and access rights. You will also be
required to monitor and control data storage capacities.
8. Assist the Infrastructure Manager and Head of IS in any network design and assist in
the administration & maintenance of the VOIP telecoms systems.
9. With the Infrastructure Manager, you will be responsible to undertake routine
preventative measures and implement, maintain and monitor network security
ensuring that all systems are secure from unwanted intrusions and attacks.
10. Responsible for managing the antivirus software across the campus, Updating when
required. You will be required to ensure that all systems both server and desktop are
secure against virus attacks.
11. Assist in supporting the college wireless network
Generic duties:
12. Assist directly in the effective delivery of a help desk service and contribute to
effective team work and a service oriented culture within the IT Service Team
13. Deploy user desktop PC’s and related equipment where required.
14. Adhere to and comply with the college financial regulations
15. Participate in staff development activities and undertake further training as part of
your continuing professional development.
16. Provide training to staff.
17. Follow strictly the requirements of the college’s health and safety policy
18. Attend and participate in college meetings as necessary and actively promote college
policies
19. Work flexibly in order to satisfy the organisational needs for computer services
20. Promote a positive image of the college in all contacts with students, employers and
professional bodies.
21. Undertake additional duties at enrolment times as required, including occasional
evening work.
22. Carry out any other reasonably comparable procedures that maybe required from
time to time

Person Specification
Please study the items in this person specification carefully and when completing your

1.
Possess professional qualifications relevant to the post or significant experience in a
similar role.
2.
Significant experience working with Main IT systems and networks
3.
Good level of experience administering and maintaining Microsoft Active Directory –
Software deployment, group policy, etc.
4.
Certification in Microsoft, Apple, VMWare, Citrix Cisco, Oracle technologies
5.
Experience supporting network hardware devices
6.
Good knowledge of category 5, 5e, 6 & fibre network cabling.
7.
Good Experience in Microsoft Windows Server 2000, 2003 and Exchange.
8.
Experience of server and network performance monitoring and a good understanding
of network security.
9.
Experience of working with Windows / Mac / Citrix / VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V,
operating systems
10.
Good level of experience of installing and configuring servers and related hardware
i.e. RAID & SCSI configurations,
11.
Experience or knowledge of software packaging and application deployment.
12.
Knowledge or experience with VOIP systems would be desirable.
13.
Experience of administering / supporting at least 5 of the following: PCs / Apple Macs /
Thin Clients / AD / Exchange / Servers / SANs / Cisco network equipment / Backup
systems / MS SQL Databases / Oracle Databases, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix, VMware
14.
Ability to write technical and service materials and experience and understanding of
service level agreements with an awareness of project management
15.
High level of interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a member of a team with
excellent verbal and written communication skills
16.
Flexible, willing and reliable with good time management and organisational skills
17.
Be willing to undertake training and development as required within the role.
18.
Possess appropriate IT skills relevant to the post, or be willing to undertake training
19.
It would be desirable if the post holder held a full UK valid driving licence but it is not
essential.
20.

Salary:
£27,094 - £28,764 pa inclusive
Please note the salary range for this post is points 32 – 34 on the
Support Staff scales.
Progression up the incremental pay scale is automatic and awarded
on 1 April annually.
New entrants are placed on point 32.
Where there is evidence of current earnings in excess of point 32, the
applicant may be placed at the salary point higher than their current
salary
Pension:
Staff are entitled to participate in the Local Government Pension
Scheme subject to its terms and conditions.
Annual Leave:
25 days per annum plus public holidays plus up to 3 days Christmas
efficiency closure.
Hours:
36 hours per week
Probation:
Employees who commence their employment between 1 September
and 31 May inclusive will be subject to 26 weeks probation before
their employment can be confirmed as permanent.
Employees, who commence their employment between 1 June and 31
August, and those with term time only contracts, will be subject to 36
weeks probation period before their employment can be confirmed as
permanent.
The extended period of probation is ensure that there is an adequate
period of “normal” working during which to provide support and assess
an employee’s performance.
Disclosure
The post will be offered subject to an enhanced Disclosure satisfactory
to West Thames College which will be conducted by the Criminal
Records Bureau.
