Course Description:
The goal of this course is to help you make a smooth transition from the school classroom to a
meaningful job. Successful transition begins with successful work experiences. In this class
you will learn:
 Your responsibilities to your school and your job
 Skills necessary to succeed at your job now and in the future (eg. communication, problem
solving, teamwork, leadership, professionalism, conflict resolution)
 Career planning process – how to prepare for a full-time career
 How to find and job and succeed at it
 How to manage your job responsibilities
This is a full year course. You will earn 1 unit of credit for the classroom instruction and 1 unit
of credit for successfully maintaining a job that averages 15 hours a week throughout the
school year.
Homework:
Homework is not generally assigned. Most work must be done in class so regular attendance is a
very important part of your grade.
Grades:
 Assignments
 Projects
 Tests
You will receive a grade for your classroom work and a grade for your on-the-job experience.
These grades are separate – they are not averaged together.
Academic Dishonesty:
Students are expected to complete all tests and assignments honestly and will not collaborate in
dishonest actions. Students will not give or accept answers or assignments unless directed to by
the teacher. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to discipline as stated in
the Student Handbook, p. 37.
For your classroom work, any assignments not turned in or any quiz/test not taken will be given
a zero and averaged into your grade. Grades will be posted in a timely manner.
Your grade for your work experience will be based in part on your supervisor’s job performance
evaluation and your hours worked.
Grading Scale: No graded work will be returned until the deadline for that assignment has
passed. The last call for acceptable make-up work (from excused absence only) will be the
Monday following the excused absence.
The scale is based upon a point system:
A = 90 – 100%
B = 80 – 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60 – 69%
F = 59% or lower
Make-up work:
Assignments are due on the assigned due date. Make-up work due to an excused absence must
be made up within 2 school days of the absence.
It is your responsibility to check for any assignments missed. Make-up for quizzes and tests
must be handled by making an appointment with me. No make-up work is allowed for unexcused
absences.
IMPORTANT EXPECTATIONS:
Your effort in this class and on your job is the key to your success. As a member of this class,
you are expected to:
 Respect each other at all times. Be courteous to one another and use appropriate
language in the classroom.
 Follow the rules and procedures outlined in the student and training agreement.
 Do your best work. Complete all assignments to the best of your ability and turn them in
by the due date.
 Because much of the learning for this class takes place in our classroom, good attendance
is very important. Come to class on time and be ready to work and learn.
I am there to help you succeed. If you need any help, please see me. My office is in room 177.
I am looking forward to a fun and rewarding school year.
