Policies
Email:
An e-mail account and access to the internet are also REQUIRED for this course.
Be sure to include your full name and which class you are taking (i.e.
ARH 1000, MW) in your email.
Attendance Policy:
IF YOU ARE ABSENT:
1. Excused Absences: At the professor’s discretion, an absence will be
excused with a doctor’s note or other documentation. If you have a doctor’s
note, legal papers, or some other documentation to excuse your absence, bring
these to me when you return to class. With an excused absence, a student may
make-up work missed. However, the student is entirely responsible for finding
out what was missed while they were absent:
1. Look at your course outline.
2. Check the Extra Handouts folder.
3. Ask your classmates to find out what you missed.
4. See me to turn in make-up work and schedule a make-up quiz if
necessary.
Make-up work must be turned in and make-up quizzes taken
within a week after returning from the absence.
2. Unexcused Absences: No make-up work will be accepted from a
student if the absence is unexcused. The following reasons are examples
of unexcused absences: vacation, had to work, couldn’t get a babysitter,
car broke down, sick-- but didn’t see a doctor, business trip, argument
with significant other, etc. If your absence is unexcused, look at your
course outline, check the Extra Handouts folder and ask your classmates
to find out what you missed. If you are absent on the day an
assignment is due, you may email the assignment to me by
midnight of that day and it will be counted on time!
Tardiness/Leaving Class Early:
It is important to be on time to class and to remain until class is
dismissed. Frequent tardiness or leaving class early will result in a grade
penalty at the end of the semester.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Due Dates:
Late work is unacceptable. Unless the student had an excused absence on the
due date, any assignment which is submitted past the due date will have 10
points (or 10%) deducted from its score. No assignment will be accepted more
than a week past its due date except under extreme circumstances.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grading System:
Assignments will be weighted as follows:
50% Major essays, major projects, and tests
35% Short (video) essays, quizzes
15% Journal entries and other projects
Grading Scale:
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: 0-59
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Academic Honesty:
Plagiarism or copying the work of another, either word for word or in nearly
identical paraphrasing, is considered a form of cheating, and will result in a
failing grade on the assignment involved. This includes copying the ideas of
others from published research or copying those of your fellow students. You
are encouraged to read books and articles related to project work and to discuss
project work with your fellow students. However, when it comes time to write
any essay or assignment you must do the work by yourself. If two assignments
come to me with nearly identical phrasing they will BOTH receive a failing grade.
It is your responsibility to keep your paper from being copied. Do not lend your
paper to someone who might copy it.
Cheating on any quiz or exam under any circumstance is unacceptable. Any act
of cheating will result in a failing grade on the exam involved. Multiple or
extreme occurrences of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for the
course.
Any act of plagiarism or cheating will be reported to the Dean of Academic
Affairs.
Citing References:
Whenever you quote, paraphrase, or use the ideas of another in an essay, you
must cite your source. For this class, use the MLA form with parenthetical
citations in the body of the text and a list of references at the end of the essay.
Classroom Courtesy
Most college students are adults, and therefore it should be unnecessary for a
professor to remind students of proper classroom behavior. Unfortunately,
experience has not proven this to be true in many cases. Therefore, I must
inform my students of the following rules and procedures:
1. All cell phones and pagers are to be turned off before class begins.
2. Be on time. Even better-- be early so that you can be ready when class
begins. Coming in late disrupts the class. Tardiness will deduct points from your
final grade.
3. Sign the attendance roster, take any handouts, and turn in assignments
before class begins. If you are tardy, do these things as soon as you can without
disrupting class.
4. Bring your textbook, journal and all required materials to every class.
5. Be respectful of others’ right to listen, speak, and be heard. Do not have side
conversations or make comments while the professor is speaking, during videos,
or when another student has been called upon to speak.
6. Use the restroom, phone, etc. during break. Avoid leaving the room at other
times unless absolutely necessary.
7. Avoid making distracting noises such as gum-popping, pen-clicking, fingerdrumming, etc.
8. Do not use tables and chairs as footrests. Do not lean your chair back on two
legs.
9. Remain until class is dismissed. Leaving early will be counted as a tardy.
Repeated tardiness or leaving early will result in a grade penalty at the end of
the semester.
