A tremendous trade to start 2012 with a short entry of very well sold
calves.
Dairy (13): Some good Friesians on offer £150 twice for best fresh
calves from L J Scott & Son and Mr J Millard. £148 for Ray Pullin,
Berkeley. Best £120+, mediums £95-£120 avg £118. 2 Spring 11
born Friesian steers made £330 per head.
Native (22): Strong entry. Medium Hereford Bulls topped at £245 for
both T S F Baker and B J & D Reeves, medium Angus bulls £190£225 all from R Beard & Son. M/s E J Webb sold a good Welsh
Black bull calf at £350, Gloucester Bull calf from D H & D R Smart at
£205. Hereford heifers to £205 from Mr Stokes with young fresh
Angus heifers very strong prices reaching £205 and £202 from R
Beard & Son, £175 and £182 for R A Pullin. Weaned heifers (8
months) to £400 from Mr stokes with 3 strong Angus heifers from NB
Farms at £405.
Simmental (8): One heifer to £270 from B Gough. Bulls a
tremendous trade, 7 forward to avg £359 top £359 (B J & D Reeves)
£350, £380, £385, £390 and £392for 5 bulls from B Gough & Sons.
Limousin (3): 1 fresh bull from MT & I Scott made £300. Weaned to
£278.
British Blue (9): 6 bulls to £400, £380, £360 for M A Maslin, £375 L
J Scott, £370 J W Cook heifers £355 (J W Cook), £300 D H & D R
Smart, £285 E J Webb.
Others (6): MRI bulls to £245 and £190 for D H & D R Smart.

A pleasing entry sold to a similar pre Christmas trade with all types of
ewes in demand. The best good meated Suffolk & Continental x ewes
in shorter supply trading between £90 - £98 topping at £100 with the
best Mules traded between £76 - £84. The half meated & plainer ewes
again seemed very well sold trading between £68 - £75. Small meated
ewes or bigger plainer ewes traded between £50 - £60. Slaughter rams
sold to £100
190 STORE HOGGETTS

Overall Average £68.23
The finished trade seemed a good trade until the stores were sold with
another exceptional trade on all forward. The few strong framed hoggs
traded over £80 topping at £81.80 for Suffolk Mules from M/s V
Newman & Son. The medium sorts traded between £75 - £80 with the
smaller sorts generally £65 - £70. Only a few exceptionally small, rare
breeds or backwards hoggs under these figures.

Overall Average – 190p/kg
Despite the big drop in prices at many local markets on Wednesday,
today’s trade was much improved but a shade easier than the pre
Christmas trade. The better shaped export type lambs were in demand
trading over 200p/kg topping at 208p/kg £84.20 for 40½ kg from M/s
P & R Clark. The general run of hoggs & medium weight sorts traded
between 190 – 195p/kg.
The heavier sorts traded between £88 - £92 topping at £120 for 81kg
from Mr G Gray.

45 STORE CATTLE
As expected the first sale after the Christmas period is always quiet
with a handful forward of mostly good quality cattle which sold to a
blistering trade. British Blue steers from M/s R Witchell & Son,
Tetbury sold to £1110 (190p/kg) with their Aberdeen Angus steers to
£928 (184p/kg) & Aberdeen Angus heifers to £865 (173p/kg).
Younger cattle from M/s S Hammond & Son, Poole Keynes saw
Limousin steers to £975 (170p/kg) with their British Blue steers to
£785 (166p/kg). Limousin heifers from the same home sold to £850
(159p/kg). Hereford steers sold to £785 (166p/kg) from Mr M
Wakefield, Wootton Bassett. A Hereford stock bull from the same
home sold to £1210.

A pleasing entry sold to a good trade despite the talk of a drop in
demand and lower deadweight returns. The best cattle (U grades) saw
a good trade with Limousin bulls to 219p/kg from M/s J & B Comer
with their Limousin steer to 216p/kg & heifer to 217p/kg. A cracking
British Blue steer weighing 700kg sold to 226p/kg from M/s D & S
Cheacker with their 655kg Charolais steer to 217p/kg. The general
cattle (R & O+ grades) traded between 185 – 195p/kg generally. The
native breeds & O+ & O- grades traded between 165 – 175p/kg.

A superb entry for the first sale of 2012 which met a tremendous
trade. More entries on the back of weakening direct sales payments
which were not reflected in today’s trade.
7 overage steers forward that trade no differently than the UTM cattle.

Top 180p £1373 for South Devon from Rod Gilder weighting 765 kg
his other beast at 660 kg came to £1,184 with a grand Charolais x
steer from George Wilcox at £1231.85. Frank Taylor, Stroud
consigned Continental x steers to £1017 and £1151 with the seven
forward averaging 174p 31150. Heifers a similar trade with 6 forward
to average 159p £960 per head with Limousin x from E R Gantlett at
£1036.75, South Devon from R H Gilder at £1058 top from D Lewis,
Cricklade with Aberdeen Angus at £1062.
60 cows forward selling to average 130p pkg or £826 per head.
Helped by a grand run of Continental cows from E R Gantlett but
plenty of Friesians so not a distorted average by any means.
Aquetong Farming topped with a Simmental x heifer (800kg) £1188
(149p) with Michael Green’s Saler (745 kg) at £1159 (163p).
E R Gantlett had the top 6 ppkg cows sold (mainly Limousin x’s)
trading 164-166p pkg with 14 of his 20 head entry over 140p pkg.
Very few traded of any breed under £1 per kg a few plain Friesians
sold late 70’s to 80p. British Friesians 130p from B J Ford and 126p
from L J Scott & Son.

135 PEDIGREE HOLSTEIN FRIESIANS
Comprising the Genuine Dispersal Sale of the in milk in calf and
served heifer portion of the “Matty” herd of Pedigree Holstein
Friesians on behalf of A C & C A Brookes.
The Sale contains 102 cows and heifers in milk (AYR calving). 15 in
calf heifers due December to April, 10 served and 8 bulling heifers.
The herd currently averages 8,000 litres @ 4.5% bf and 3.5% protein
and a cell count avg of 196. The herd is fed on a balanced ration and
are cubicle housed. The cows are Cogent and Alta sired with the older
cows by Genus bulls. Service Sires are from the Alta Stud (Baxter,
Altarush and Altasquire) with some bred to the British Blue.
This early sale in 2012 provides a good opportunity to top up with
deep bodied milky cows with a good number fresh or recently calved.
