An unannounced Special Sale with over half the entry being weaned calves that met a very strong trade. A mixed buy a fresh calves present today that were generally harder to sell except for the very best types.
Dairy Breeds (18): A superb fresh Friesian Bull calf from R T & E B
Townsend topped at £185 followed closely by another cracking bull from
R C Ponting & Son at £172 and £118. Best bulls £85+ 2 nd plainer types £25-£50, Avg £88.

Native Breeds (15): Best Hereford bulls £240 for A W Jones & C G
Davies, heifers to £140 also from C G Davies £105- £125 for D J Hibbard
& sons, medium angus bulls to £160, weaned heifers to £185 from B G &
L D Rich.
Simmental (38): Best show of calves today from this breed. Fresh calves to £370 and £345 from B J & D Reeves, £360 for R C & H A Gallop, £355 for J Millard, avg £300. 8 heifers topped at £228 for M/s B Gough &
Sons, £220 for b J & D Reeves, best £170+. A tremendous run of calves
3-4 months old off cows from DF J 7 D Reeves saw the bull calves to £435 and best heifers at £325 of similar age. Messrs Lotmead Company sold a grand bunch of 5 heifers at £232.
Limousin (18): Best young bulls to £260 for D Meredith and £250 for J &
L Garside avg £190. Top heifer at £212 for C & e Best, £202 for a tidy calf from R T & E B Townsend avg £160. M/s Reeves sold weaned
Limousin bull at £460.
British Blue (24): Top fresh bull at £300 from M/S D J & N J Wall, £275 from Chilton Farming generally medium bulls forward today and demand lower. 4 heifers to £225 for Chilton Farming weaned Blue bulls (2 months) from L J Scott at £362. Heifers weaned from the same vendor made to £270.

A similar number forward met an even dearer trade with all forward well sold. Young Charolais steers (15 – 16mnths) sold to £940 (194p/kg) &
£895 (187p/kg) from M/s R & M Wilson, Froxfield. Hereford steers
(19mnths) sold to £1035 (173p/kg) & £875 (169p/kg) from M/s C Harber
& Son, Earls Croome. A cracking British Blue steer (22mnths) sold to
£1095 (163p/kg) from M/s D & F Randall, Coaley with their Aberdeen
Angus steer (21mnths) to £1130 9195p/kg).
The heifers also met a very good trade with British Blue’s to £770
(198p/kg) from M/s J Jones & Son, Cricklade & £820 (150p/kg) from M/s
D & F Randall, Coaley. Pedigree Aberdeen Angus heifers (18mnths) sold to £910 (182p/kg) from Mr B Howes, Yate.

A pleasing entry saw trade the same as the early part of the week and similar to last week. The better lambs traded between 192 – 198p/kg topping at 200p/kg
£72 for 36kg from Mr C Benson. The general run of lambs traded between 175
– 185p/kg with a few plainer or looser coated lambs 165 -170p/kg. The heavier lambs traded generally between £78 - £83 topping at £84.80 for 45½kg from
Mr A C Cook.

A more mixed entry of cows than recent weeks with the best selling well, although at lower prices with the other plainer cows back in value, young feeding types in test wanted and well sold. 31 cows avg 102p top 149p. John
Holfords Limousin Cow 585 kg top price of 149p with same breed from B J
Ford 685 kg at 136p. E C Wilcox sold Blonde and Limousin cows to 131p and
133p both 790 kg. Topping the gross values at £1047 and £1031. The best
Friesians sold well but still back 10/15p on a fortnight prior. Still, good returns achieved with Vendors pleased. F D J Bennett topped at 117 and 115p £762 and 3658, best types 105-115p. Top value for G J & F L Robertson 700kg at
£766. The medium Friesians traded 85-100p plainer sorts in the 70-80p bracket now cows sold under £373. Most plainer types grossing £415, £460 mediums
£480 - £640, best Friesians £720-£760.
A G Hunt sold two overage steers 755kg £1189 and 690 kg £1031. R J Hussey sold a Blue heifer 505 kg to £710 and M/s Cutter sold Heifers to £537. Good trade for middle age – more could sell well.
