The weak pound has resulted in little imports and a very strong export trade
coupled with a shortage of hoggetts and the end result is a very strong
demand. Today’s entry saw a large percentage of heavy hoggetts forward but
the trade was ahead of most other centres and deadweight prices.
The best handyweight hoggetts trading between 160 – 175p/kg topping at
184p/kg £70 for 38kg from M/s D & M Whitcombe.
The heavier sorts traded over £70 topping at £81 for 50.5kg (160p/kg) from
Miss V Jones.

MOD PAYS MILLIONS TO FARMERS FOR
NOISE DISTURBANCE TO ANIMALS
A report stated recently in the Telegraph stated “Farmers whose animals have
suffered from stress because of low flying fighter or military planes won
hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation from the Ministry of
Defence”. The noise of the aircrafts and helicopters on training missions,
have terrified livestock causing disturbance and injury in several cases.
Voyce Pullin have conducted a number of similar claims for farmers
throughout Gloucestershire and surrounding counties. The extent of
successful claims undertaken by our team is vast and often farmers and
landowners are unaware that they can use our professional services to
represent them in such matters.
In addition to the usual pipeline and road compensation schemes other claims
undertaken by our team include:
1. Claims against electricity companies entering onto land.
2. Negotiations for site compounds and helicopter landing sites.
3. Access and damage compensation for pylon repairs.
4. Damage to property/land from vehicle incidents.
5. All insurance issues relating to livestock losses.
6. Negotiation of access rights to and from railway networks.
If a related incident has affected your livestock then conduct Voyce Pullin for
further advice and information.

Single Payment Scheme paperwork is now arriving – Voyce Pullin can

PRIME LAMB NUMBERS SOLD VIA
LIVESTOCK AUCTION MARKETS RISE BY
27.8% IN ONE YEAR
The latest AHDB annual market throughput statistics clearly show that
farmers are returning to the live auction ring to sell their prime cattle and
prime sheep in unprecedented numbers.
In 2008 some 6.9 million prime lambs were sold through livestock auction
markets in GB, which compares to 5.4 million in 2007, an increase of 27.8%
on the year. The new season SQQ lamb price was 130.50p per kg, which was
28% higher, compared with 2007. Old season SQQ lamb averaged 126.32p
per kg, 16% above the previous years levels. In 2008 some 1.8 million cull
ewes were sold through livestock auction markets in GB, which compares to
1.5 million in 2007, an increase of 20% on the year. The overall cull ewe
average price in 2008 was £32.96 per head, £4.35 higher in comparison with
2007.
In 2008 some 370,000 head of finished cattle were sold through livestock
auction markets in GB, which compares to 369,000 in 2007.AHDB estimates
that the overall GB finished cattle slaughtering were down by 5.5% in 2008.
The overall steer average in 2008 was 144p per kg, 29% up on the year with
heifers averaging 146p per kg, 28% above 2007 levels. Young bulls averaged
141p per kg, 30% up on the year. 170,000 cull cows were sold through live
auction marts in 2008 to average 91p per kg, 40% higher than the 2007
average.
Chris Dodds, Executive Secretary of The Livestock Auctioneers Association
says “these statistics are even better than I had predicted. They clearly tell us
that farmers in GB see the auction mart system as a vital tool to their
marketing options, with the live ring being their only available forum where
live, open, transparent and competitive trade can all be brought together in
one place. Competition is the cornerstone to our industry and livestock
markets are undoubtedly here to stay. It is my opinion that the live ring has
been a price setter rather than a price taker over the last 12 months and
farmers are always keen to follow and support a marketplace that continually
offers strong competitive bidding for their products. As more farmers return
to live ring selling it offers purchasers more of an assurance that they can
selectively source the correct quantity of stock that their slaughter contracts
are demanding.”
