An entry of mostly young cattle sold to a very good trade. Aberdeen Angus steers (9
– 13mnths) sold to £630 (185p/kg) & £578 (193p/kg) from Mr M Wood, Minety. A
grand run of Limousin steers & heifers (8 – 10mnths) from Mr G Rea, Challow
Station saw the steers to £740 twice (211p/kg & 218p/kg) with the heifers to £568
(189p/kg). Friesian steers (11 – 16mnths) sold to £490 (133p/kg) from Mr H Vincent,
Rodbourne. A strong Friesian bull (26mnths) sold to £755 (126p/kg) from Mr C
Gallop, Minety.
A handful of cows met a very strong trade with Aberdeen Angus to £1160 (145p/kg)
from M/s E Weaver & Son, Malmesbury. Friesian’s sold to £750 (109p/kg) &
Shorthorn’s to £940 (139p/kg) from Mr C Gallop, Minety.

A tremendous trade again with all calves very clear but numbers again relatively low.
Dairy Breed (5): Top £110 for J G & S J Tunley. £95 for J D Wright & Son. Avg
£81.
Native (25): Providing majority of today’s entry. Small Hereford to £192 from T S F
Baker. Heifers to £165 and £125 from D J Hibbard & Sons. Angus bulls (mediums)
to £235 from R & I Plummer and D W & S R Ingles, avg £223. Angus heifers to
£170 and £175 for D W & S R Ingles, avg £156. Weaned Hereford heifers met a
tremendous trade selling to £370 for R E Brittain with 5/4 month Angus heifers from
D W & S R Ingles at £360-£375.
Simmental/Charolais (3): Simmental bulls to £302 for Ben Gough, Charolais
Heifers £222 for Robert Oughton.
Limousin (5): Bull calf £315 for M T & I Scott heifers to a solid £208 and £228 for
D E Meredith..
British Blue (6): Short numbers very strong trade. R H & M E Oughton sold bulls to
£408 and £330. His heifers made £310 and £280..

249 STORE CATTLE
Many faces around the ring as if it was a spring day all witnessing the dearest trade
ever seen a Cirencester market new & old. Trade was up £20 - £50 on the previous
week’s unbelievable trade.
The best stronger cattle sold to an exceptional trade with the highlight being a run of
¾ bred Limousin steers & heifers (18 – 23mnths) from M/s S & W Ball, Charfield.
The steers sold to a top of £1390 (236p/kg), £1300 (236p/kg) & 1170 (241p/kg). The
heifers sold to £1120 (224p/kg) & £1110 (229p/kg). The stronger steers (18 –
24mnths) generally traded over £1000 with Charolais steers to £1240 (200p/kg) &
Limousin’s to £1210 (214p/kg) from Mr H J Caswell, Wanborough. The native
breeds saw Hereford steers to £1180 (209p/kg) & Aberdeen Angus to £1115
(203p/kg) from Mrs M Bamford, Moreton Valance with Aberdeen Angus to £1170
(213p/kg) from M/s D & M Manners, Tockenham. All 54 steers over 18 months
averaged £1170.
The stronger heifers (18 – 24mnths) were also very dear with a Limousin to £1080
(186p/kg) & Charolais’ to £1020 (191p/kg) again from Mr H J Caswell,
Wanborough.
The younger stores (15 – 18mnths) topped at £1100 (218p/kg) & £1040 (208p/kg) for
Simmental steers from M/s D Rumming & Son, Lydiard Tregoze.
The weaned calves (8 – 12mnths) were probably the dearest in comparison topping at
£945 (193p/kg) & £885 (198p/kg) for Limousin steers from M/s Monkhill Partners,
Blaisdon. Limousin steers from M/s J Emmerson & Son, Coln St Aldwyns sold to
£770 (216p/kg) & £680 (227p/kg). Heifers from the same home sold to £540
(203p/kg) & £530 (193p/kg)

SQQ 206p/kg – Overall Average 194p/kg
More forward saw a sharper trade with again the handyweight export type hoggetts in
demand trading between 210 – 225p/kg topping at 235p/kg £88 for 38½kg from M/s
C & T Shaw. The general run of handyweight hoggs all traded around the £2kg. The
middle & heavy weights saw an improvement on the week with the 43 – 46kg hoggs
£86 - £90 and the heavier sorts £92 - £96 generally topping at £100 for 71kg from
M/s R & B Kimber.
A handful of spring lambs sold to £76 for 32kg (238p/kg) & £58 for 23½kg
(247p/kg) from Cotswold Farm Park Ltd.

A shorter entry of mostly small or plainer ewes. The couple of the best good meated
Suffolk & Continental x ewes sold to £90 with Mules to £81. The half meated &
plainer ewes again traded between £65 - £75. Small meated ewes or bigger plainer
ewes traded between £50 - £60.
311 STORE LAMBS
A similar number forward sold to another very strong trade. The few stronger framed
or near meat sorts traded between £76 - £80 topping at £92.50. The medium sized
hoggs seemed well sold trading between £70 - £76 with the smaller sorts £62 - £66
generally.
22 BEEF CATTLE

Steers 180p/kg Heifers 185p/kg
A similar entry sold to another good trade with a mixed show on offer. The few better
shaped sorts traded around 200p/kg topping at 212p/kg for a 630kg Limousin steer
from M/s L & M Smith with a 550kg Charolais heifer to 206p/kg from M/s Archard
& Son. The generally run & heavyweight cattle traded between 185 – 190p/kg
generally with the lesser shaped sorts 155 – 162p/kg.

A short entry of mixed quality cows alongside a dozen good quality overage steers
and heifers.
The cows averaged 128p selling to a top of 184p £1410.15 for Miss W D M Mills,
Chaceley, their second Simmental steer at 745 kg reached £1367.08, Messrs L & M
Smith consigned a wonderful run of middle aged cattle with 675 kg Limousing
selling to £1231.88, 700 kg Limousin to £1228.50, Hereford (620 kg) to £1044.70
and 610kg Hereford to £1027.85. A E Smith & Co sold Hereford Blue and Devon x
steers to £1056, £1057 and £1171. With 11 sold in excess of £1,000 and 4 above
£1200. Overage heifers reached 31044.40 for 360 kg Charolais from Whitehall Ltd,
A smart Canadian Angus Bull (1000 kg) from R J Allen made £1195. The few cows
on offer saw Charolais (730 kg) to £1383.35 and Simmental (775 kg) to £1344.63.
Both from Miss W D M Mills. Friesians topped at £991.85 for Reading & Kirby.
