56 REARING CALVES
10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin
Average £198.00
A mixed entry of mainly medium quality calves that sold to a superb trade,
heifers looking particularly dear as purchasers look to future replacement of
suckler cows.
Dairy Breeds (17): Best strong calves 2/3 months to £202 to P J & S R
Bennett, similar aged sorts from C B Powell & Son at £180 per head.
breeds saw Hereford steers to £980 (152p/kg) from M/s Hodges & Sons,
Brinkworth. The overage steers saw the better sorts £780 - £820 topping at
£850 (142p/kg) for British Blue’s from M/s M & B Hawker, Allington.
The strong Continental heifers were also short in supply and met a fast trade
with the better meated sorts over £780 topping at £820 (149p/kg) for Limousin
heifers from Mr A Gibbs, Stoke Prior. The general Continental heifers traded
between £650 - £750 (135 – 150p/kg). The native breeds were short in number
with a strong Hereford heifer to £795 (142p/kg) from Mr C Potter, Dauntsey.
The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) again met a strong trade with the stronger
better shaped sorts traded between £850 - £950 (140 – 160p/kg) topping at £990
(152p/kg) for Charolais steers from Mr D Richardson, Besford & £970
(143p/kg) from M/s R Pert & Sons, East Challow. The general Continental
steers traded between £780 - £820 (135 – 160p/kg). The native breeds again
were well sold with the stronger Aberdeen Angus steers to £962 (150p/kg) from
Mrs D Bailey, Easton Grey.
Best fresh calves to £105 for A R & M Highman & Sons, best rearers generally
£65 - £90. The smaller and plainer Friesian calves still all heading to rearing
units at £24-£38 per head.
The heifers (18 – 24mnths) were also well sold with the better shaped sorts over
£700 topping at £772 (163p/kg) for British Blue from M/s A & A Slatter,
Toddington. The general run of heifers traded between £630 - £700 (140 –
160p/kg).
Native Breeds (13): Very dear today particulars small heifers that are surely to
be future cow replacements. Hereford bulls sold to £240 for D J Hibbard &
Son, £210 for A R Highman whose heifers made £190-£198, all Hereford
heifers £165+. Angus heifers traded at £200-£220 with young bulls £255 with a
few weaned types on offer 6-10 weeks old £350-£380.
The younger steers (14 – 18mnths) again sold to a strong trade with the best
steers selling between £750 - £800 (150 – 170p/kg) topping at £835 (178p/kg)
for Saler steers from M/s D & J Gilder, Winchcombe & £775 (201p/kg) for
Limousin steers from M/s N & J Gilder, Aston on Carrant.
Continental (26): continuing to meet a blistering trade with all on offer,
particularly the medium and smaller claves looking very well sold. Simmental
heifers traded £215-£230 for Lodge Farms, with Limousin heifers £170-228 for
M T & I Scott, blue heifers a similar trade.
Best young bull calves saw Limousin from Roy Townsend at £360-£362 his
heifers £252-£265 with a pure Limousin heifer from M Potter, Goosey at £275.
Month/6 week Blue bulls £412 for P J & S R Bennett, best young Blue from
Liz Best £355.

The young heifers (15 – 18mnths) saw the better shaped sorts trading between
£540 - £580 topping at £600 (146p/kg) for Limousin again from M/s N & J
Gilder, Aston on Carrant. The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to
£600 (138p/kg) from M/s D Candy & Son, Christian Malford.
The weaned calves saw Aberdeen Angus steers (11mnths) to £625 from Mr R
Hale, Broad Town, (9mnths) to £590 (175p/kg) from Mr R Ridley, Corse Lawn
& (8 – 10mnths) to £580 (181p/kg) from Mr J Winning, Blunsdon.
Simmental heifers (9 – 12mnths) sold to £578 (173p/kg) from Mr W Lane,
Denchworth.

Ltd, Cherington, A purebred South Devon bull (6years) sold to £950 from
Exors of A Organ, Cheltenham. A pedigree Simmental bull (19mnths) sold to
£880 from M/s J Jones & Sons, Cricklade with a purebred Charolais bull
(13mnths) to £900 from Mr J Watkins, Twigworth.

A shorter entry made up of mostly younger cattle with the trade still very
strong.
The strong Continental steers (24 – 30mnths) were in short supply and sold to a
very good trade considering the continual easing of the beef trade with the best
shaped & meated sorts trading over £850 topping at £990 (136p/kg) for a
Charolais steer from M/s R & C Chancellor, Hawkesbury. The general run of
Continental steers traded between £780 - £820 (130 – 150p/kg). The native

Last weeks good trade drew forward more cows this week however demand
still outstripping supply.
Best meated Friesian topped at 119p for E G & J M Ryall, 112p for W J Hunt.
Best cows today 98-110p generally a very similar trade to 12 months prior.
The medium meat cows 75-85p with the plainer feeding cows providing a
strong base to the trade ranging 64-70p with none under this but the plainer
cows on offer mainly younger and looking a good feeding option compared to
other strong cattle prices.

A good entry sold to a fast trade ahead of most other centres with the best
handyweights hoggs traded between 185 – 195p/kg topping twice at 205p/kg
£82 for 40kg from M/s R D Scudamore & Partners. The general run of hoggs
traded between 180 – 190p/kg. The heavier hoggs also met a good trade selling
generally between £90 - £95 topping at £100 for 60kg from Mr D Davis.

Overall Average - £77.61
A very strong trade with the best Suffolk & Continental ewes traded between
£95 - £110 (over £100 8 times) topping at £130. The half meated ewes also met
a flying traded selling generally between £65 - £80 with the plainer sorts £45 £60 generally. Slaughter rams sold to £100.
