105 REARING CALVES
10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin
Overall Average –£119.63
A generally more difficult trade today with many buyers up to numbers
going into the winter, but allowing others to select stronger sorts for less
money.
Friesian (56): Best bulls sold £75+ topping at £122 for D J Hibbard & Sons,
£100 for Manor Farm, Chedworth & R J Kingston. The medium rearers
£60-£75, smaller rearers £35-£50. The plainer sorts £7-£20. Swedish Red
calves sold to £148 for M D Pike £60 for W F Fisher.
Native Breeds (14): Angus bulls topped at £238 for R T & E B Townsend,
£228 for R Beard & Son. Heifers to £138 for E Rawlings, medium heifers
£75-£98, Hereford heifers topped at £185, £172 and £150 for T S F Baker.
All Hereford heifers a strong trade. Sussex heifers to £135.
Simmental (4): Bulls only to £275 for W F Fisher, £255 for John Millard.
Limousin/Blonde (11): Quality bulls to £285 and £270 for C G Davies, best
just a touch less money today. Blonde bulls to £270 and £245 for R B
Gallop. Limousin heifers topped for M D Pike at £212, £200 for Roy
Townsend, mediums £140-£155.
Blues (12): Another good trade that saw best bulls to £285 twice for Roy
Townsend, £282 for W F Fisher. Heifers from the same home topped at
£252, £240 for Roy Townsend £170-£195 generally the medium heifers.
A run of 2/3 month old weaned calves from F D J Bennett, Cromhall saw
Friesian bulls to £125, Simmental bulls to £355, a Blue bull to £358. His
best Simmental heifer (3 months) made £345 and a younger sort at £230.

The farming heifers also met a very strong trade with the better sorts selling
between £700 - £800 (140 – 160p/kg) topping at £835 (153p/kg) for a British Blue
from M/s A & A Slater, Toddington & £812 (155p/kg) again from Mr R Knight.
The general run of heifers were a shade dearer than the previous week trading
generally between £550 - £600 (130 – 145p/kg)
The younger steer again made up 30% of the entry with the 15 – 18 months old
sorts again an exceptional trade with the best Continental steers £700 - £800 (150 –
180p/kg) with Limousin steers to £895 (160p/kg) from Mr J Rodgman, Leominster
& Simmental steers to £840 (153p/kg) from Mr A Wheeler, King Stanley. The
native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £720 (152p/kg) from M/s R & J
Portch, Brinkworth.
The younger Continental heifers again sold well with the better sorts topping at
£715 (136p/kg) for a Simmental heifer again from M/s R & W Whatley, Badbury
The weaned calves & young stores (8 – 12mnths) were again short number and
met a very good trade with Charolais steers (11mnths) sold to £605 (173p/kg) from
M/s Temple Bridge Farms, Temple Cloud & Limousin steers (8mnths) to £450
(140p/kg) from Mr G Humphries, Water Eaton.

Averages: Steers £641, Heifers £581
Another good entry saw some grand farming cattle on offer and again
another very strong trade, up a fraction on the previous week especially on
the better sorts.
The strong Continental steers (24 – 30mnths) continue to sell well with the
well meated sorts still in short supply with the best trading over £850 (135 –
160p/kg generally) selling to £1000 (135/kg) from Mr L H Watkins, Stroud
& £940 (149p/kg) from Mr K Amor, Kelmscott. The native breeds saw
Hereford to £848 (154p/kg) from Mr D Browning, Longney & Longhorns to
£790 (149p/kg) from M/s A Brodie & Son, Whitbourne. Overage steers saw
Continentals to £860 (121p/kg) again from Mr L Watkins.
Simmental
The stronger Continental x heifers were in very short supply topping at
£740 (142p/kg) for British Blue’s from Mr V Hunt, Garsdon. Overage
heifers sold to £875 (135p/kg) from Mr F West, Aldermaston.
The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) continue to meet an exceptional trade
with the best seeming extremely dear. The stronger Continental steers traded
between £750 - £900 (140 – 170p/kg) topping at £1010 (158p/kg) & £1000
(151p/kg) for a grand run of Simmental steers from M/s R & W Whatley,
Badbury. British Blue steers from Mr R Knight, Stoke Orchard sold to £885
(158p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £852 (146p/kg)
again from Mr D Browning, Longney.

8 DAIRY CATTLE
Having decided to sell Dairy cattle on a weekly basis the trade goes from
strength to strength and is now the only weekly sale centre for Dairy cattle in
the region, which allows Vendors to sell their heifers as fresh as possible to
maximise value unlike other less regular sale centres.
Adrian Ractliffe consigned a superb fresh Pedigree heifer to top the sale at
£1,900 cubicle housed and giving 6 gallons she sold to D Meredith.
C B Powell consigned a smart Pedigree British Friesian heifer by Scadwell
Nectar 82, she made £1,480 to Mr J Cook. An MRI fresh heifer from the
same home sold to £1,100 with 2004 born Friesian cows running with the
Limousin bull to £760.

Overall Average –135p/kg
A few more lambs on offer met again one of the dearest in the country with
the trade generally easier all week. The best lambs traded between 138 –
148p/kg topping at 156p/kg £60 for 38½ kg from Mr A Goscombe. The
general runs of lambs traded between 133 – 137p/kg. The heavier lambs sold
to £67.20 for 55kg from Ms V Riera.
11.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin
A decent trade at the end of a much tougher week throughout the country with the
general trade much lower and falling.
Beef cows topped at 106p and 103p for Angus cows 720 and 840 kgs for G
Warren & Sons and C A Llewellen Palmer. Best heifer cows 100-106p. Friesian
cows sold well to reach 90.5p for L J Scott and 78 for D J Goddard. Medium
Friesians traded sensibly 63-76p with the plainer types 49-57p.
A super Limousin and Charolais steer from Roger Steele topped at 144ppkg (770
and 680 kg) with Roger Deeley’s Limousin steer at 125p. Heifers overage to 136p
for Simmental from Rob Breakspear, A Charolais heifer from Roger Butt to 130p.

A shorter entry with trade a shade easier with very few best ewes on offer.
The stronger Suffolk & Continental ewes traded between £50 - £55. The half
meated ewes seemed well sold in comparison selling generally between £40
- £50. Slaughter rams sold to £44.

A few more cattle forward met a good trade with only a few best on offer.
The better shaped cattle traded between 140 - 160p/kg with steers topping at
167p/kg for a 635kg British Blue from M/s Breakspear & Son with
Simmental heifers to 146/kg from Mr H J Noad.
The general run of cattle still met a good trade selling between 135 –
140p/kg.
