82 REARING CALVES
10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin
Avg £173.00
Another good entry for time of year with the best calves remaining very
good money with the medium types a touch harder to trade mainly due to
quality and a few less farmer buyers present around the ring resultant of
the good harvesting weather.
Dairy Breeds (7): Short numbers so difficult to gauge any change in the
trade, but generally in line with recent weeks. R C Ponting & Son, top at
£100 and £80 with £82 for Chilton Farming, £72 for E & V Kidner, Avg
£61.43.
Native Breeds (38): Nearly half the entry today! Hereford bulls toped at
£225 for R J Prout, mediums £160 -£180, £120 and £130 for D J Hibbard
& Sons. Angus bulls traded well to reach £180, £190, £200 and a top of
£230 for E G Hedges & Son, Shepperdine, Thornbury with L Lewis also
selling at £200. Best fresh sorts £180+ avg for 14 forward good at
£177.43. Ken hedges also topping the heifers with a cracker at £150,
another good shaped calf from E & V Kidner made £140. Avg £117.60.
Weaned Angus heifers (9 months) made £270 and £240 from M/s A
Goodman.
Simmental (6): Short entry of good quality. Stroud Green Farm Ltd top
with a bull at £332, mediums trading £240-£250. Heifers avg £208,
topping at £228 for John Millard.
Limousin (7): Bulls to £260 from M T & I Scott & Son, 3248 from R C
Ponting. Avg £205. Heifers to £198 from MT 7 I Scott & So, £182 from
Chilton Farming.
British Blue (24): Another good entry with the best bulls selling very well
all above £300. G M Lambert topped today with J W H Ball at £355,
Messrs B Gough & Son close behind at £350, £332 L Lewis, 3322 Stroud
Green & £320 for Mark Maslin, medium bulls traded at £260-£265, 3rd
quality and small bulls 3168 - £185.
10 Blue heifers forward saw the best 4 at £225 and topping at 3260 for J W
H Ball and £255 for D J & N J Wall, Elmstone Hardwicke, same price for
Stroud Green Ltd. The remaining heifers traded at £150 to £195 with the
10 averaging just short of £200 at £199.80.

A similar entry saw to an exceptional trade with each week the cattle

farming cattle saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £1030 (184p/kg) from M/s

A much larger entry as seen in nearly all centres this week has led to a drop in
trade especially after last week’s flier. Trade was better than many had expected
with little export demand and low trades reported nationally.
The best lambs traded between 185 – 195p/kg topping at 207/kg £85 for 41kg
from Miss I Voyce. The general run of lambs traded between 168 – 180p/kg
with only a few of the plainer or very loose coated lambs under these figures.
The heavier lambs traded generally between £76 - £83 topping at £87 for 51kg
from Mr E Wilcox.
