Our topics Ourselves Light and Dark Materials Fairytales Jungles Seasides General Information for Year 1 Our topic for this half term will be ‘Ourselves’. We are planning to teach this topic through a cross-curricular, creative approach. The purpose of this topic is so that the children can find out all about themselves and link their understanding to practical and real life situations. Have a go at labelling the body parts here. The children will be learning about their body, senses and how they grow and change in comparison to other animals, which will enable them to be more aware of the world around them. They will recognise the differences between animals, including humans. A strong emphasis will be put upon how to keep our bodies healthy, such as looking after our teeth, eating and drinking healthily. The purpose of this topic is so that the children can find out all about light and darkness being the absence of light. Have a go at investigating the different light sources here. The purpose of this topic is so that the children will develop their understanding of Materials, their purpose and their properties and link their understanding to different aspects of the curriculum. We are planning to teach this through a cross-curricular creative approach. The purpose of this topic is so that the children will develop their understanding of Fairy Stories as well as other traditional stories and link their understanding to different aspects of the curriculum. Come and read a jungle story Our topic for this half term will be ‘Jungles’. We are planning to teach this through a cross-curricular creative approach. The purpose of this topic is so that the children will develop their understanding of the Jungle, sounds, beats, rhythms and rhymes through different aspects of the curriculum. Have you been on holiday? Where did you go? What did you see? Bring a seaside or holiday picture into school for show and tell. Let’s have a look at holidays in the past. Our topic for this half term will be ‘Seasides’. A few of the activities within this topic will include: • finding out about seaside holidays today and in the past. • Making a puppet for our puppet theatre. •Writing stories based around the seaside. •Playing seaside games. Brainbuilder homework will be sent home every other Friday and should be returned to school the following Wednesday morning for marking. You can give your child as much support as they need. P.E. P.E. may change in Year1 . We will confirm this as soon as we know for definite. The children need a P.E. kit including a pair of pumps / trainers, a red T. shirt and a pair of blue shorts. If for any reason they are unable to participate then a note needs to be handed into the class teacher. Reading Please read regularly with your child and record comments in their diary Reading homework will be sent home as and when it is required. How can you help at home? Encourage your child to read for 10 minutes each night. Practise correct letter formation to aid your child with their handwriting. Practise correct number formation.
