EXCEL CIVICS Teacher: Mr. Ryan Prom Email: r.prom@biglake.k12.mn.us Textbook: United States Government Textbook Website: http://my.hrw.com COURSE DESCRIPTION Throughout the class we will study government including The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and federal, state and local government. In addition to government, this class also contains a character development unit. The character development unit will focus on the traits of attitude, preparation, respect, honesty, character, leadership, courage, and integrity and others yet to be determined. Students in this class expressed an interest in a more intensive study of American Government. Please make sure you come prepared for class with all the necessary materials, including your completed assignments. RULES & POLICIES The rules for this class are very simple. 1. Be respectful of yourself, others, and property. Know and follow the Hornet Way. 2. Be engaged in your education. 3. Bring proper materials to class (pen or pencil, paper, textbook). Candy, food, or beverages will not be allowed in the classroom. Cough Drops and Gum are allowed until it becomes a problem. Please place wrappers and discarded gum in the garbage!! Thank you. Be cooperative and courteous to substitute teachers. Misbehaviors will result in consequences for the student/students responsible for the unacceptable behaviors. Following the Student Handbook. ABSENCES Approved Absences – Students with an approved absence will have 2 days to makeup any work missed. If a test is missed, the students have 2 days to schedule a makeup time with the teacher. (Admit Slip) Unapproved Absences – No work will be accepted from students with unapproved absences. LATE WORK & PASSES You are allowed 2 late assignments per semester. Late work is due the next class day to receive full credit. If the assignment isn’t turned in the score will be a zero and you will have used a “late” pass. TARDIES If you are not in the classroom when the bell rings, or if you are in the room but do not proceed to your seat, you will be marked tardy. Upon receiving your third tardy of the semester, you will serve a 30-minute detention. Upon receiving your fourth tardy, you will receive a detention and be referred to the principal. Mr. Prom Course Syllabus - Civics 2011 QUALITY WORK All assignments handed in need to be completed and of quality work. Any assignment, which is not quality work, will be handed back and the student will be asked to redo the assignment. Assignments must be completed before entering the classroom. GRADES Report Cards—The grade you receive for every marking period will be based on many different learning activities. These include, but are not limited to, daily work, tests and quizzes, Current Event Activities/Quizzes, cooperative learning, notebooks and folders, and class participation. A minimum of 50% of your semester grade will be based on quiz and test scores. There will be no extra credit assignments given in HP Civics. Retests are not given, unless there is an emergency situation. Weighted grades are used in this HP class when determining a student’s individual GPA. See your student handbook for further explanation.
