Course Description:
The state of North Carolina has designed Civics and Economics to teach students the skills and
knowledge necessary to become effective citizens. This semester-long course examines
citizenship, government, politics, law, and economics in the United States. The study of Civics
and Economics is crucially important to students as the world we live in experiences such
massive political, social, and economic change. This course is required for graduation and will
equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to function in our society as a responsible
citizen and smart consumer.
Recommended Materials:
 3-ring binder
 Loose-leaf notebook paper
 Several pens and pencils
 Highlighters
 Dividers
**We will have outside assignments that will require the use of a computer/internet please let me
know if this will be an issue because we will need to make arrangements prior to the due date.
Grading Scale: Nine Weeks course grades will be based on the formula below:
General:
60%- Tests, Research papers, Projects, Current Events, Writing Exercises/Blogs
40%- Quizzes, Daily grades, Homework
Honors:
70%- Tests, Research papers, Projects, Current Events, Writing Exercises/Blogs
30%- Quizzes, Daily grades, Homework
Note: Students will take a state exam at the end of the semester call the Measure of Student
Learning (MSL). This exam will count for 25% of the student’s final grade in the class.
Grading Scale:
A- 93-100
B- 85-92
C- 77-84
D- 70-76

Policies Regarding:
 Homework and Outside Projects: It is the student’s responsibility to turn in assignments
on their due date. Students are expected to be responsible for their own work.
 Make-up work: To access make up work for abscenses, students will need to consult with
the teacher. Handouts passed out in class can be obtained from the Missing Work folder.
Students will have ONE week to make up any missed assignments and turn them in.
 Testing: All students are expected to study for quizzes and tests. Cheating will NOT be
tolerated. This includes talking during tests or quizzes, looking on others’ papers, and the
use of a cell phone or any electronic device during the test/quiz. Any student caught
cheating will receive a zero on the assignment as well as disciplinary action. If a student
is absent and misses a test it is the student’s responsibility to come to make up the test
and/or quiz after school. Tests must be made up in ONE week upon returning to school.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
I. RESPECT AND ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY: Respect yourself, your classmates,
your teacher, the school, and any other individual who may come into our class.
II. BE ON TIME, PREPARED, AND READY TO LEARN: Please have all materials
ready to start class and be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.
III. LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS: This will save us both a lot of time and energy. Please
DO NOT talk during classroom lecture/instruction.
IV. DEADLINES ARE DEADLINES, NO EXCUSES! Any late assignments and/or
missed work not made up within the deadline will result in a zero for the assignment.
PLEASE give me your BEST effort each and every day in class, WORK HARD! DO NOT
SLACK!
CLASSROOM POLICIES:
I. NO CELL PHONES, IPODS, ELECTRONICS IN CLASS…UNLESS IS
PERMITTED BY THE TEACHER!
1ST offense- Teacher Warning (FIRST DAY)
2nd offense- Phone is taken & student is written up for offense
3rd offense- Phone(s) will be collected at the beginning of class each day
II. Dress code will be enforced!

III. NO FOOD IN CLASS! Drinks with LIDS will be permitted as long as it does not
become an issue.
IV. CHEATING/PLAGARISM- student will receive a zero on the assignment and will be
written up.
V. When it’s time to leave:
 Gather your belongings and throw away trash on, under, or around your desk. DO
NOT leave my room messy!
 Sit quietly in your seat and wait for the teacher to dismiss you at the bell.
EDHS TARDY POLICY:
There are five minutes allowed to get from one class to another. Excessive tardies may result in
loss of parking privileges.

**Any tardy beyond 5 minutes is an unexcused absence and will be considered as “out of
assigned area/skipping” and will be written up.
