CLASS TITLE: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST I
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is work conducting laboratory tests to provide information for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or
treatment of diseases.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
(Note: The examples of work as listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any

assigning specific duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.

Collects body fluids for laboratory tests to provide information for diagnostic, treatment,
and/or research decisions.
Performs serology, immunology, immunohematology, hematology, bacteriology, urinalyses,
biochemical, drug susceptibility, and/or other tests.
Performs phlebotomies.
Prepares and inoculates culture mediums and identifies organisms.
Prepares reports of test results.
Prepares reagents and chemicals.
Performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.
Performs quality control testing for all procedures as required.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the principles of biology, chemistry, and physics.
Knowledge of medical technology practices and procedures.
Knowledge of the types of laboratory tests.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing procedures.

Knowledge of chemicals and reagents.
Knowledge of the significance of laboratory tests.
Skill in operating laboratory and scientific equipment for conducting tests.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS





For laboratories requiring licensure:
Licensed or temporarily licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the specialty area(s)
(i.e., microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, biophysics,
cytotechnology, or histopathological technology) for which the laboratory is registered in
accordance with Florida Statute 483; or
For laboratories exempt from licensure by Florida Statute:
A high school diploma or its equivalent and three years of experience in laboratory work.
College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or
720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes
three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.
