BUSINESS SYSTEMS ANALYST NATURE OF WORK This is professional, technical and analytical work in the research and analysis of complex information and specifications for the development, design and configuration of integrated computer business systems and programs to meet management information requirements. Work involves responsibility for researching and analyzing business system workflow, operations and work products and designing, configuring and implementing business system software to meet those requirements. Work includes responsibility for the completion of feasibility studies and cost benefit analyses for converting manual operations to computerized systems, the modification of existing automated systems and making recommendations for the implementation and configuration of software packages and information technology solutions. Work includes considerable consultation with users concerning new or existing business requirements and information processing needs. Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform any and all work tasks and comply with any work schedules or attendance or duty requirements which may be established by City or department rules. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed by observation, conversation and the evaluation of reports, recommendations and analysis of results achieved. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK Plans, organizes, evaluates, and participates in the research, development, modification, testing, implementation and operation of complex business system applications. Conducts feasibility studies documenting the content and extent of information dissemination, work flow and procedures; recommends system design and configuration options and identifies potential areas for business system application. Responds to user requests for application design and reporting requirements; creates test data sets; performs system module testing and data verification. Prepares detailed documentation including the construction of system and business enterprise flow charts and block diagrams indicating applicable relationships, computations, operational sequences and workflow. Researches system problems and errors; coordinates with vendors, consultants, contractors and user groups in resolving issues and implementing software patches, upgrades and updates. Assists users in the day-to-day operation of systems; prepares training materials and conducts training classes on system use. Performs functional analysis, requirements definition and ERP module configuration and testing; develops specifications, data mapping, and configuration of transaction and control tables. Performs and participates in data interface design, data migration and reconciliation. Performs related work as assigned. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of modern business and data systems analysis and processing concepts, techniques and operating principles. Considerable knowledge of relevant business systems design, research, configuration and implementation. Considerable knowledge of relevant functional area business, accounting and record keeping practices of a municipal government. Skill in organizing and integrating information from a variety of sources and defining systems security and control procedures. Ability to prepare flow charts showing business system processes and workflow, data and resource requirements and to document specifications for configuring and modifying business system set-ups and functions. Ability to ascertain facts through testing and observation, analyze needs and procedures accurately and logically and test system segments to determine requirement adequacy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, consultants and outside agencies as necessitated by the work. Ability to work under stressful conditions and persevere on long and difficult work projects. DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in information technology, industrial engineering, public administration, accounting or related field. Four years experience in relevant business systems functional area at a senior analyst level with at least two years experience with associated information technology systems and software.
