Research Assistant in Health Science

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 8 month part-time contract, 2,5
days per week fixed term position as a Research Assistant in Health Science with the School of
Psychology and Centre for Pain Research at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
This position is funded by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and is
available from 1st October 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to contract end date of May
2016.
The successful candidate will work as part of a research team on the project titled: “Parent-child
mutual interactions during pre-schoolers’ everyday pain experiences: a pilot study.” The project will
provide more knowledge and inside on parental reactions to everyday pain experiences, which
constitute the main pain experiences of pre-schoolers. In particular the feasibility of two different
methodologies to observe parent- child interactions within their home environment will be
investigated.
Duties:
 Providing research support (e.g. conducting studies using quantitative and qualitative
methods)
 Undertaking field data collection (e.g. conducting observations) and undertaking data
analyses
 Participating in team meetings
 Contributing to and coordinating preparation of research reports for funders and other
bodies
Essential requirements:
 Degree in an applied Health Science discipline such as Psychology, Health Informatics,
Public Health, Health Promotion, Biostatistics
 Experience of conducting clinically-focused research studies in children
 Ability to demonstrate strong research, analytical and writing skills, including accessing
information quickly and strategically
 Excellent communication skills, in particular report writing Attention to detail and strong
organisational skills
 Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
 Evidence of the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, dynamic
team
Desirable requirements:
 Post-graduate degree in applied Health Science discipline such as Psychology, Health
Informatics, Public Health, Health Promotion, Biostatistics
 Knowledge and/or experience with paediatric pain research
 Experience in conducting observational studies
Employment permit restrictions apply for this category of post
Salary: €21,850 - €28,509 fixed per annum, pro-rata for part-time post
Start date: Position is available from 1st October 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
