Applications are invited for the post of Academic Coordinator Fixed Term, Part Time 0.6, Term
Time in Psychology (from December 2014 to 31st May 2015, and September 2015 to 31st May
2016, 3 days a week). The Academic Coordinator will be involved primarily with organisation of
the 1st Year undergraduate programme. They will also support the administration of the tutorial
programme at 2nd and 3rd year level.
As well as the co-ordinating and administration duties, a level of academic input is involved in the
management of a team of tutors, in delivery of tutorials and in a co-ordination and advisory role in
the Psychology Test Library. Applicants should have an honours degree in Psychology as well as
having excellent organisational skills. Experience as a tutor/laboratory demonstrator at third level
is required.

Salary: €29,166 to €41,873 p.a. pro rata
(applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose of Post
The principal purpose of the post is the co-ordination of the 1st Year undergraduate programme.
More than 600 students were registered for the 1st Arts programme in 2013/2014. In addition the
Academic Coordinator provides some academic coordination duties at 2nd and 3rd year, primarily
in coordination of the tutorial system. As a primary duty, the Academic Coordinator works with
the Chair of the 1st Year Co-ordination team (a full time member of the academic staff of the
School) to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the 1st year BA programme. The 1st Year
Chair rotates every two years, and the Academic Co-ordinator plays an important role in ensuring
consistency of service over time. The role will include delivering tutorials.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Heads up a team of tutors (c.10-15) who provide tutorials to the 700 Arts and Health
Sciences students who take 1st Year modules.

Delivers tutorials.

Provides a point of contact for students, and ensures that those who need additional
support are referred as appropriate (to the 1st Year Coordinator, academics contributing to
the programme, counselling services etc.).

Ensures that academic staff and tutors are aware of students with special needs.

Assist in the maintenance and updating of Blackboard sites and Blackboard modules

Assist in full student review of teaching and learning, including gathering feedback,
identifying action points emerging from this feedback, and supporting the 1st year team in
addressing these action points.

Monitor and maintain records for the continuing assessment components of First Year
Psychology, including recording of marks allocated for written work, attendance at tutorials
and laboratory classes, and level of participation in the research participation component.

Provide pastoral support as required in instances of student non-participation, especially
in relation to continuing assessment components.

Monitor and provide feedback to academic staff, especially to the Head of School and the
First Year Psychology Coordinator, in relation to the learning objectives of the
tutorial/laboratory programme.

Manage the First Year Research Participant Pool, ensuring that research participation is in
strict accordance with accepted ethical principles governing participation in research.

Manage the Psychology Test Library, ensuring that the Library and its contents are
maintained in good working order and accessible to those who are eligible, including
undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff, in accordance with School guidelines.

Assist in the collation of examination results

Support the administration of the tutorial programme in 2nd and 3rd Year.

Essential Requirements:




An honours degree in psychology.
Experience as tutor/laboratory demonstrator, in a Third Level institution.
Excellent organisational ability and skills in time management.
Good communication skills.
Desirable Requirements:



Have ability to remain abreast of developments in the academic areas of the discipline of
psychology pertinent to the duties of the post.
Have experience working in a team context.
Have experience of academic coordination, in a Third Level institution.

Incentivised Scheme for Early Retirement (ISER):
It is a condition of the Incentivised Scheme for Early Retirement (ISER) as set out in
Department of Finance Circular 12/09 that retirees, under that Scheme, are debarred from
applying for another position in the same employment or the same sector. Therefore,
such retirees may not apply for this position.
Pension Entitlements:
This is a pensionable position. Details of the applicable Pension Scheme will be provided
to the successful candidate. The Pension element of this appointment is subject to the

terms and conditions of the Pension scheme currently in force within the University. This
Scheme may be amended or revised by the Irish Government or its agents at any time.
The Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004 set a minimum
retirement age of 65 and removed the upper compulsory retirement age for certain New
Entrants to the Public Sector on or after 1 April 2004. Effective from 1st January 2013, The
Single Public Service Scheme applies to all first-time new entrants to the public service,
as well as to former public servants returning to the public service after a break of more
than 26 weeks.
Retirement age set, initially, at 66 years; this will rise in step with statutory changes in the
State Pension Contributory (SPC) age to 67 years in 2021 and 68 years in 2028.
Compulsory retirement age will be 70.

Board of Assessors
Applications will be considered by a Board of Assessors, which will shortlist and
interview candidates and the interview report will be approved by the President.

Interview Dates
Candidates will be advised of arrangements in due course.

Expenses
Candidates invited to the Assessors’ Interview (see (a) above) will have their
reasonable return travel and subsistence expenses paid.
(d)
The successful candidate will be required to submit evidence of age, original
qualifications and undergo a medical examination.
All candidates will in due course be notified of the outcome of their application. The
Human Resources Office will offer the post to the candidate appointed once the
appointment has been made by the University Appointing Authority.
