Programme Manager – Research Fellow (0.5 time) Blood Cancer Network Ireland, Biosciences, NUI Galway Ref. No. NUIG-157-15 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 0.5 time, fixed term contract as Programme Manager for Blood Cancer Network Ireland (BCNI) based in the Biosciences Research Building at NUI Galway. The position is available from February 2016 to December 2018. This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Cancer Society. Organisation: Blood Cancer Network Ireland (BCNI) focuses on research and early phase clinical trials for patients with blood cancers in Ireland. BCNI will build national capacity in blood cancer research and ensure early clinical translation of promising drugs by bringing together a critical mass of clinical and translational researchers, a sufficient population base and access to clinical samples. BCNI will integrate infrastructural resources around the country to generate a strong foundation for phase I clinical trials, translational research and population health. It will build and strengthen national capacity in three major areas: early stage clinical trials, national registry and sample biobanking. Job Description: BCNI wishes to recruit a motivated and talented half-time Programme Manager (PM). The PM will work with the director Prof Michael O’Dwyer and network partners to coordinate and administer all aspects the network including planning, organizing, monitoring, and reporting of both the research and financial aspects of the BCNI. The successful candidate will also be expected to play a leading role in writing grant applications to contribute to the sustainability and expansion of BCNI. The PM will liaise with companies to establish research partnerships and grant applications and organise dissemination activities to increase the profile of the BCNI with clinical researchers, industry and the public. Duties: Monitor and report overall progress of the BCNI programme towards targeted milestones and deliverables for the funding agencies. Perform financial management of the BCNI network. Prepare and deliver periodic scientific reports for the Scientific Advisory Board, the Industrial Advisory Board as well as progress reports for the governing body and sponsors as required Assist Director and PIs in assessing the scientific merit of newly proposed phase1 studies Prepare and support new applications for industrial/entrepreneurial funding which will enhance and develop the Network’s activities Identify potential national and international funding sources and prepare, write and submit research grant funding applications. Peer review manuscripts for publication and research funding applications prior to submission. Work with the institutional officials in contract negotiations including sponsor agreements. Actively engage in the dissemination of research outputs/activities, including identification of the appropriate pathways for dissemination and provide support for preparation of manuscripts and presentations. Represent the activities of the BCNI as required at local, national and international events (including talks, panel discussions, meetings with funding agencies, industry representatives etc.). Assist with regulatory and ethics submissions Organise and participate in the recruitment of staff. Organise and conduct meetings with BCNI staff to clarify objectives, assess progress and develop plans. Participate in meetings and committees as deemed necessary. Qualifications: Essential A PhD in biochemistry/molecular biology or a related subject. A minimum of 5 years relevant research experience A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the cancer drug discovery industry Track record of demonstrable accomplishments in biomedical research as exemplified by relevant international peer reviewed publications. Extensive experience coordinating research funding submissions through national and international agencies. Proven capability in grant writing with a track record of successful applications. Demonstrable experience of research grants reporting. Excellent presentation skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organisational and analytical skills. Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment. Availability to travel nationally and internationally as required.
