Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a
Postdoctoral Researcher with the Discipline of Geography at the National University of Ireland,
Galway. This position is funded by Enterprise Ireland and is available from March 1st 2015 to
contract end date of August 31st 2016.
The FarmEye project is a joined collaboration initiative between the Discipline of Geography
(http://www.nuigalway.ie/geography) and the Discipline of IT (http://www.it.nuigalway.ie) at NUI
Galway. It involves domain experts from a wide range of areas including geo-spatial statistics, GIS,
farm management and ICT. The FarmEye project has a strong commercial focus and it is
envisaged that it will result in a start-up company.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will investigate in-field nutrient spatial variation in an Irish context, to
develop the potential to use GIS and geostatistics to integrate micro-scale in-field spatial variation
in soil test data to help inform better nutrient management in an agricultural context. The
postholder will liaise closely with other researchers / farmers in this project.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a track record in GIS and geospatial statistics with particular
focus on their applications in agriculture. A PhD in Geosciences or a closely related field is
essential. Experience in digital soil mapping is also highly desirable. The candidate should have
excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about
applying new skills in agriculture; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Salary: €37,750 - €38,860 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will
apply)
Start date: Position is available from March 1st 2015.
