Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Associate Director, Information Technology Operations is responsible for overseeing the day-today operations for the enterprise level server functions within Information Technology (IT) for the University of Nevada, Reno. These functions primarily consist of the core server infrastructure and middleware (data center networking, virtualization, research computing) for the University, statewide including the UNSOM Clinics. As a member of IT management, the incumbent advises and consults on IT matters, and aligns unit operations with IT goals related to servers, backup/storage and server support infrastructure. The position manages Information Technology Operations administrative faculty and reports directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 60% - Administrative and technical management Work with core and critical infrastructure and server management teams to improve general IT working practices and methods. Recommend policies and procedures needed to effectively handle technology issues Provide orientation and training in best practices for all core IT infrastructure and critical servers/services. Actively promote continuous learning among IT core infrastructure staff through meetings, formal classes, workshops, conferences, etc. Coordinates with the users of central IT computing resources to ensure appropriate equipment, services, and capacity are available Coordinate and facilitate solutions to problems Ensure the central IT computing resources maintain the highest possible uptime and general availability Provide administrative management to other campus IT resources. 15% - Core Server/services support Oversight Provide direction and input to the Manager, Server Support to improve general IT working practices and methods. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Associate Director, Information Technology Operations has the ability to independently make decisions on daily work assignment and management of the server administrators who provide the server infrastructure for the University, and defines the operations goals for the Manager, Server Support ensuring they are consistent with the IT Operations unit and the University IT organization. The incumbent must ensure consistent integrity of the University’s web infrastructure, the centralized storage/backup of data, hosting and administration mission critical applications, and server computing support. The Associate Director, Information Technology Operations consults the Chief Information Officer on long-range computing technology and strategic plans for the University and computing budgets for hardware and software. Impact: Provision of effective and timely solutions to technology problems is important to the smooth functioning of every department in the University and is essential for faculty and student success. The decisions and judgments made by the incumbent are critical in ensuring the effectiveness of each unit under the incumbent’s purview and in the success of Information Technology organization as a whole. 4.
