1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. The Chief Diversity Officer develops and implements a variety of positive, proactive initiatives that advance a strategic and integrated approach to diversity in all aspects of university life. The individual advises the President and institutional leadership team on policies, procedures and practices that create a diverse and inclusive university. The position develops and oversees initiatives designed to enhance the campus environment, especially for underrepresented populations, by serving as a liaison to appropriate committees and constituents and by developing partnerships to promote and advance a campus culture that values diversity and inclusiveness. The position reports to the
President of the University of Nevada, Reno (University).

50% - Diversity Program Management
Lead in the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, proposals, programs, and operating procedures that impact diversity and inclusion
Serve on the President’s Council to provide insight, frame issues and provide a perspective on how diversity and inclusion may be a consideration in matters coming before the Council
Provide strategic, integrated program direction and consultation to senior administration on major institutional issues regarding diversity initiatives
Provide overall coordination and direction to University programs related to diversity
Direct the activities of the University’s diversity and climate enhancement efforts
Co-c hair the University’s Intercultural Council comprising representatives from the institution’s various committees and task forces
20% - Communication
Communicate program information to faculty, staff and students and create visibility for the university’s diversity efforts
Seek input from faculty, staff and students through discussions and other forums
Initiate programs, workshops, and educational strategies to increase knowledge and skills regarding diversity and to foster professional development opportunities, better institutional awareness of, and commitment to, student, faculty, and staff diversity goals
Represent the University externally on diversity issues and serve as the institution’s representative to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Equity, Diversity and
Inclusion Council
Coordinate activities among on-campus units, commissions, committees and task forces
Develop strategic external partnerships, alliances and collaborations and represent the
University through networking and collaboration
20% - Research and Analysis
Develop and contribute to studies and surveys of institutional needs and trends in areas related to student, faculty, and staff diversity; disseminate findings to inform the President,
President’s Council, Academic Leadership Council and campus of efforts to diversify the campus

Work collaboratively with Human Resources, Office of Prospective Students, Center for
Student Cultural Diversity and other relevant departments to create best practices, programs and policies to increase diversity and inclusiveness
Conduct needs analysis to identify opportunities to enhance the climate for diversity and inclusion
10% - Assessment and Reporting
Monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effect change required for improvement
Prepare reports as needed summarizing and evaluating the status of diversity goals at the
University
Work with schools, colleges and programs to provide data and information to accrediting agencies

Level of Freedom
Creating and enhancing an environment where diversity thrives is the responsibility of all university employees, students and the community. The Chief Diversity Officer serves as a focal person around which ideas and actions coalesce and are communicated. The Chief Diversity Officer takes initiative to research, identify and put forward ideas to the P resident, President’s Council and Academic
Leadership Council. The incumbent has the freedom to implement approved initiatives and evaluate the efficacy of these initiatives.
Impact
One of the tenets of the University Mission Statement is “Respects and seeks to reflect the gender, ethnic, cultural, and ability/disability diversity of the citizens of Nevada in its academic and support programs, and in the composition of its faculty, administration, staff, and student body.
” The Chief
Diversity Officer supports this mission in their day-to-day duties and if successful, moves the university forward by recruiting and retaining a more diverse community of students, faculty and staff.
If unsuccessful, the university may fail to realize its goal of providing a diverse environment that better prepares graduates for participation in an increasingly diverse society. Student and faculty retention rates may suffer, and placement rates and job success of graduates may be negatively affected.
Additionally, accrediting efforts of individual colleges, schools and programs may fail to meet standards in the area of diversity.
