Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Database and Systems Architect located in Environmental Health and Science (EH&S) is responsible for the planning, purchase, deployment and operation of the computer server and database systems required for EH&S campus-wide operations. These systems provide a wide variety of computing resources to the campus community. The Database and Systems Architect reports to the Critical Systems Manager in Information Technology (IT); however, the Assistant Director, EH&S functions as the work manager to assist in objective setting, program development and day-to-day workload. The Database and Systems Architect possesses a high degree of technical knowledge of server systems and their underlying technologies. Working closely with IT, the position provides technical leadership in all areas of server and database systems including strategic planning. The incumbent must assimilate needs of users and highly technical information with resource availability and development strategies for the on-going strategic planning for the department. The position also does some application development and provides technical direction to the EH&S developers. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 30% - Database Development and Management Architect and manage mission-critical EH&S databases, database servers, and data warehouses Architect data schema for database applications Provide technical support and ensure integration with existing technologies and data Analyze data and produce reports for various departments on campus and regulatory agencies Ensure data quality and integrity are consistently maintained Build and maintain data interfaces Design SQL Server reports Extract and transform data from various systems and sources Maintain and update data interfaces to external systems including Central Receiving package delivery, Stanford chemical tracking, HR system, etc. 30% - Server Management Manage servers, patches, new installs, upgrades for development and production servers Collaborate with the GIS team to maintain existing maps and develop new applications using GIS Monitor systems and log files in order to take preventative action Identify needs and ensure that appropriate systems are available Coordinate with approved vendors to develop an appropriate configuration for the server system Develop policies, procedures and guidelines to support efficient operations Provide input on the division’s long term plans Meet regularly with the critical systems group in IT to share information and obtain updates on campus changes Manage the EH&S organizational unit in the campus active directory Position Description - Database and Systems Architect (EH&S) Page 3 30% - Application Development and Support Create workflows to automate data collection and improve efficiency of the current data collection systems Support applications Develop new applications, including mobile applications Design and maintain EH&S Sharepoint sites Oversee the development of new applications Collaborate on the development and maintenance of various relational databases Provide guidance and leadership to developer(s) and ensure standards for development are followed 10% - Campus Projects Provide support as needed for campus projects which may include data analysis, enterprise application support, writing scripts, developing system modifications or Oracle/SQL Server interfaces, etc. 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The incumbent is accountable for maintaining the systems and data integrity for EH&S. Creativity and initiative is involved in ensuring the reliability of equipment while improving and enhancing systems. Decision making is used in troubleshooting, problem resolution, purchasing hardware and software and in supervision. The incumbent must work independently and take initiative to set goals for improvements in EH&S computer operations. The supervisor provides input on priorities and software/equipment purchases. Impact: Systems contain regulatory information that is critical in demonstrating compliance in regards to EH&S regulations. Systems that perform poorly or erratically can reflect negatively on EH&S and the University as a whole. If hardware malfunctions or does not produce data required for compliance the University may lose its waste disposal permit or other privileges. These applications utilize large amounts of data and reliability is important. A service outage is immediately noticed and impacts EH&S’s ability to conduct business. Satisfactory and timely delivery of software and hardware needs creates a positive image of EH&S, assists with compliance with regulatory agencies and improves the performance and efficiency of EH&S personnel. Some data regarding inventories and locations of radioactive isotopes, highly toxic chemicals, or bio-hazardous agents requires high levels of security and the system integrity must be preserved at all times to prevent unauthorized access and misuse of critical information. 4.
