Individual placement description Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust Royal Oldham Hospital Individual Placement Description All information to be completed by the LEP. Placement F1 Trauma & Orthopaedics The department The Orthopaedics department deals with trauma cases (based on T4, the trauma ward) as well as elective procedures (Ward T3). There are six Consultants, seven middle grades and six juniors, comprising one Trust doctor, one CT1 trainee, three FY2s and three FY1. There are daily trauma meetings on T4, weekly departmental teaching sessions and daily fracture and specialist orthopaedic clinics. All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to Take a history and examine a patient Identify and synthesize problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Trainees are closely supervised and expected to adhere to high standards of medical competence. Trainees are expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with infection control and aseptic practices. Trainees work closely with members the MDT. Where the placement is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement Teaching will be provided during consultant ward rounds, and from other more senior doctors. T3/T4, The Royal Oldham Hospital TBC The FY1 is responsible for patients’ day-to-day care on the wards, with cross-cover of patients when other trust doctors are on leave, ward jobs are usually shared between the juniors regardless of consultant. In addition, pre-operative stabilisation of trauma patients and preoperative assessment of elective patients are also required. Attendance in theatre is sometimes necessary due to lack of assisting surgeons, but though encouraged, is not essential on a regular basis. Attendance at fracture clinic and orthopaedic clinic are again encouraged but the wards are the FY1 trainee’s main priority. Discharge letters should be dictated after a patient is discharged. The trainee is also on the on-call rota, in which acute care of patients on wards and new admissions can be experienced.
