NW Thames Foundation School Individual Placement Description The information in this document is based on the experience of the FY1s that have recently completed this post. Placement F1 Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) The department There are 3 Consultants based on MAU, with 1 of them on the unit at any one time. There are also 4 Registrars, 4 FY2s and 4 FY1s. Trust & Site West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. Wards MAU 1 and 2. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities The FY1 on MAU is responsible for seeing newly admitted patients on the Post-take Ward-round with the Consultant, and then doing any outstanding jobs for these patients. Once these are completed the FY1s can help out the ‘take team’ with the clerking of new patients. Learning outcomes from this placement are: Taking a history and examining patients. Prescribing medications safely. Keeping of accurate and relevant medical records. Managing time effectively. Prioritising tasks efficiently. Mastering the art of discharge summaries. Communicating effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues. Using evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care. Acting in a professional manner at all times. Coping with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems. Educating patients effectively. Becoming life-long learners and teachers. Learning through a busy variety of medical presentations. Good learning opportunities to see different medical cases and perform practical procedures. Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement* One of the following: Dr Paresh Mistry, Dr Nida Chammas and Dr Elaine Hui. Main duties of the placement Completing the post-take ward round each day with the MAU Consultant and any associated jobs for the patients. Assessing new patients after admission to AMU, doing jobs prior to transfer to medical wards or discharge. Helping out the on-take team whenever necessary. Undertaking an audit. Giving journal club and teaching presentations to the MAU Medical Team. Typical working pattern in this placement Monday: Post-take ward round, ward jobs, take. Tuesday: Post-take ward-round, ward jobs, Grand Round Meeting, take. Wednesday: Post-take ward-round, ward jobs, take Thursday: Post-take ward-round, ward jobs, FY1 teaching, take Friday: Post-take ward round, ward jobs, take On call requirements: Every other Thursday. 1 in 8 weekends (08.30-21.00) Employer information West Middlesex University Hospital, Twickenham Road, Isleworth, Middlesex, TW7 6AF. It serves a local population of around 425,000 people and the hospital has over 400 beds. * Please note that at this Trust the role of the Educational and Clinical Supervisor is merged into one role. One Educational Supervisor is allocated per placement.
