Main duties of the placement
The doctor will be attached to clinical teams,
educational supervisor Doctor Paul Strickland
(General Adult) or Doctor Jameel Hussain
(Psychiatry of Later Life). The FY1 will have
day-to-day responsibility for the management of
patients under the care of the supervisors on
the relevant wards, including:

undertake assessments of newly
admitted patients including full
psychiatric history, mental state
examination and physical
examination

regularly review patients on an at
least twice weekly basis, including
mental state examination tests

arranging appropriate physical and
psychological investigations to
patients needs

performing routine physical
investigations including bloodtaking, blood gases and insertion of
IV cannula

accurate recording of information
using written and computer-based
systems

liaising with other medical
professionals, carers and relatives

prescribing of drug treatment

providing information to patients
about purpose of medication and
any possible side effects

providing discharge summaries
when individuals are discharged
from the unit

attendance at multi-disciplinary
team ward round which will include
presentation of case histories and
summarising case presentations
