North Western Foundation School ELHT Programme Individual Placement Description Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities FY1 Pathology and infection control. The department of Pathology comprises microbiology, histopathology, Haematology and infection control. The department comprises three separate laboratories with numerous consultants in different specialties. Whilst in the pathology placement, the FY1 will be expected to rotate between the different specialties and work closely with consultants from each specialty. Further, the FY1 will have to organize a timetable that ensures they get the most out of the placement. This will include scheduling time with the Health protection agency, working in labs, attending post-mortems, attending infection control, micro, and c.diff ward rounds. The FY1 will have numerous opportunities for audit and research and the chance to present a case at grand round. The educational objectives of this placement include: Learning in detail about all aspects of microbiology especially correct antibiotic prescribing. Learning about aspects of infection control and ways to reduce hospital acquired infections. Develop skills in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Audit current practices in pathology to find ways to improve the service. Understand how labs work in relation to hospital requests. Lower ground floor. the Professor Sajjad Mirza The FY1 doctor is responsible for helping the consultant microbiologist’ in their day to day work in liaising with wards. The FY1 will be expected to attend ward rounds with consultants and infection control nurses. FY1’s will also need to attend scheduled teaching provided by the pathology department and by the post grad centre.
